We had Tristen's first IEP meeting this morning and it was a complete success!! Our school district has agreed to create a blended preschool class for Tristen to attend this fall (10 typical kids and up to 5 children with special needs). He will be the first child with "labeled" special needs in our district to attend the "typical" preschool classroom. The current system is set up with children with special needs in a 100% self contained classroom in a completely separate building than the typical preschool. Children with special needs currently have absolutely no interaction with their typical peers (yes, and it is 2010!). I began informal talks with the district back in October, just after Tristen's 2nd birthday. Our last meeting was back in March and still at that time I didn't know which way they would go. I insisted that his IEP be this Spring even though he doesn't turn 3 until September 11th. Up until the end of the meeting where placement was discussed, I still didn't know how it would go because different members were talking about both programs - my husband and I held our ground and referred to a guide provided to parents by the state and cited LRE. It worked and we are very happy that he will be attending preschool with our neighborhood kids!
