Welcome Adrienne,

My daughter is 13, my only child. We live in Massachusetts. I love this

list--it's informative in a friendly, tolerant way and very supportive. We are

also lucky to have some members who are on the Spectrum themselves and whose

input is fantastic.

Where are you from?

Welcome to the group! You didn't say what area of the country you are from. I

live in Kansas City, Missouri. We have our 6 yr dd with autism signed up with

our local regional center. She now gets funding through the autism project which

helps with things like behaivor therapy and respite care.

There is a lot of support with this group! I'm very glad I've had this board to

come to!

Subject: New to group

Hi everyone,

My name is Adrienne and I have a 4yr. old daughter with mild autism.

She was diagnosed in January. It has been hard for us and now we are

trying to get her more services through the school district. She has a

behavior therapist and a private speech therapist plus she receives

speech therapy through the school district. I am trying to do

everything I can to help her. I am always looking for suggestions,

advice or just a shoulder to cry on. I am glad I found this group.

Thanks,

Adrienne

Frisco is located about 25 miles north of Dallas. Galveston is closer to

Houston. We live in North Texas.

I've been to Dallas too. I have family there. It is beautiful. I liked

Texas and have wanted to move there since my husband lived there. I like

the feel because it is not so tense as Atlanta. My uncle that lives in

Dallas used to own a bank which I think was called the Bank of Texas but he

sold it to a national bank.

I took a Jeep trip once from Atlanta to San Capistrano CA and back. A

2 week journey camping the entire way. It was fun and I am glad I got the

opportunity to do that before children.

Dallas is a great place to live especially the towns further north like Plano,

Frisco and Mckinney. I like it better than Houston for sure and I was born

there. In frisco we still have some ranches with cows and horses. It is so nice

out here. We have the big city atmosphere with a lit bit of country life. It is

great.

I think she actually lives in Cado Mills? Is that near plano? She

works at some utility company answering phones & dispatching. Her son

is I think in 7th grade.

Hi Penny,

I'm glad you have been able to access care more quickly that first suggested,

but sorry for what you and your daughter had to go through for this to occur.

Many do need medication to address the anxiety in order to be able to do the ERP

therapy, and often a high dose of the antidepressant is needed to be most

effective.

Do watch closely as the dose is increased, particularily if your daughter is

already having outbursts. While anger is not uncommon with OCD, it can increase

with the sri's. The slower you can go with dose increases the better we found,

and many here as well.

It is unfortunate that your previous school did not understand the struggles

your daughter was going through, but I'm glad you are finding the new school

takes an active role in helping. I'm sure this must be a big relief for all of

you. School can be such a challenge for these kids.

Our son, 18, is doing quite well now. His onset of OCD was at 15, although we

know now it was probably always there, in some fashion. We went through two

years of struggles with medication and being stuck, our son unable and/or

unwilling to take on the ERP treatment. When he finally did, it shifted quite

quickly, and was amazing to see.

At the worst point it was around the clock thoughts and rituals, our son could

not go to school, or do much of anything but try to distract himself from the

thoughts. When they get the medication, if needed, and the anxiety is lowered,

and they are able to take on the ERP, they really can get better, it just takes

time.

Hang in there. I hope the increase in prozak starts helping soon.

Warmly,

Barb

> I've been meaning to find the time to post ever since I joined the group. My

10 yr old daughter was diagnosed with OCD and generalized anxiety disorder this

past March. We've known that something was different about her ever since she

was very young. We're originally from TX and battled with the schools and her

pediatricians since preschool to get her tested. The school refused to help

because " it wasn't affecting her school work " as she made straight A's, but they

didn't see the hours of struggles each night just to get through homework. Or

the many pages she had thrown away because it wasn't perfect so she erased holes

through them, so of course she had to start all over (she can't turn in a page

with holes in it). We moved to DE last Sept. and have been so thankful that we

are now at a school that wants to help her, we have a ped. that recognized there

was a problem (and actually listened to us), and we've found a great therapist

and psychiatrist that are really starting to help.

>

> We were able to get her in to see the therapist farely quickly, but were told

there would be a several month wait to see the psychiatrist to see if she needed

any meds for the anxiety. Things were going okay until it was time to return to

school after spring break. Returning to school after a break has already been

hard on her, but this year was the worst. She actually unbuckled and jumped out

of the car while we were going about 20 on the way to take them to school.

Luckily, she walked away with only a mild concussion, BAD black eye, and some

road rash on her hips and elbows. The other positive was that this allowed her

to get an emergency appt with the psychiatrist (Praise the Lord). She was put on

10mg Prozac which helped a lot. Her rages and her compulsions were beginning to

get under control. But recently the outbursts of anger and rage have become more

frequent.

>

> Luckily, at her weekly therapy session Tues. when we mentioned this to the

therapist she was able to get the psychiatrist to come in also and we decided to

up her Prozac to 20mg. It's only been 2 days, so I'm not sure what difference

it's making yet. I can't tell you how much it has helped me to read all of your

posts and know that I'm not alone and that it can get better, it IS managable.

>

> Well, this is longer than I intended it to be so I will go. I can't tell you

all enough how thankful I am for this group and for all the amazing and helpful

information that is posted here.

>

> Thanks, Penny

Hi, I am the mom of a 14 yr old girl with OCD, ADHD and possibily TS.

I heard about this group at the meeting for the Deecio campers in Seattle. My

daughter was the one " brave girl " . I want to share and find out more, especially

about spitting. The last time I tried this it did not post, I am going to see

if this does. If I am posting in the wrong place please send me a message.
