Okay so this is whats going on. river is 7 years old. He does pretty good. When we go to the store for ex... he hits me but hts at home too. his behavior gets tiresome at times when things dont go his way. . He has these outrages and at tiems we have to leave the store. The doc says this med will help to concentrate and be able to tolerate being around people ..

Hi Debbie!

Here is are a couple of descriptions:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adderall

http://www.drugs.com/adderall.html

http://www.drugs.com/pro/adderall.html

I know some kids who are on it (with and w/o DS). I work at an elementary school. I have seen it do miracles and I have seen it do nothing. It is a medication that has to be continually monitored to get the prescription amount titrated correctly.

It can have the side effect of lack of hunger leading to weight loss. Talk to your doctor about that. It can also be dangerous for kids with heart conditions or Hyperthyroid as wll as other conditions.

Would love to hear feed back on how it works for River. Look forward to others response about the med.

ADHD drugs are powerful, if the purpose of the drug is to control behavior -

then you may have some alternative meds that don't " zone " out your son. I've

seen people on ADHD drugs and they can work well, but you have to get the meds

right.

Ginkgo biloba and Body Bio PC really helped calm down my son. ADHD drugs may be

considered for DS purposes in the future for cognition because of

norepinephrine, but I doubt that they would help your son with cognition w/o

complimentary treatment in the hippocampus. We have also tried Bio-Strath and

Rhodiola Rosea, these can help the general population for ADHD purposes. It

depends upon what you want.

My son is overweight and could probably benefit from an ADHD drug treatment just

for that purpose alone. We have a prescription for Focalin-XR, it is still

sitting in a drawer in the kitchen.

ADHD drugs can help children with DS. Their behavior is often directly related

to dysfunction in the brain. I'm not familiar with mood swings such as rage,

not sure why your son is hitting you.

As far as your other message, " zoning out " is referring to someone who doesn't

have the medication at the right dosage, most likely too high.

My oldest son (no Ds) has ADHD. He is 15 and has been taking medication

for his ADHD since he was 6. He took Adderall XR (you just take it once

daily) for many years. It worked very well for him until about 2 years

ago when we had to change his dose to 25 mg because the 20 mg was no

longer allowing him to concentrate in school. When we went to 25 mg he

suddenly became an insomniac! Could not sleep if his life depended on

it. That sometimes happens for some people. The drug is supposed to

" spike " during the day and wear down at night. Sometimes they no longer

" spike " they just gradually go up and plateau all day and night ( I wish

I could draw you a simple illustration to show you what I mean ) causing

insomnia. For that reason we had to switch to Focalin XR. From our

experience with my son, Focalin XR does NOT act as an appetite

suppressant (Adderall did - I would have to make sure he ate a good

breakfast before taking it and then he would barely eat all day at

school, then be hungry for dinner after 7 pm or so when it had worn

off). Just an FYI, I would not recommend Stratera at all! Anyway, up

until the time he became unable to sleep, the Adderall worked well to

control his symptoms. No problems noted so far on Focalin XR - he's

been taking that for about 2 years.

If River is not on any good quality Omega 3 DHA/EPA products, I would highly

recommend that you supplement his diet with those. Good quality products would

include the Nordic Natural and Carlson brands to name a few. Any child with

Down syndrome can benefit from lipid therapy, it may drastically help your son.

I believe the Omegas can help as well as Ginko for cognitive function but don't

understand how this would help difficult behavior, possible ADHD. There are

herbal remedies, one product I remember named Calm Child has various herbs, one

being catnip (believe it or not) which is used as a natural remedy for anxiety,

insomnia, nervousness and sometimes ADHD along with Valerian root, etc. Maybe

someone can explain to me how the Omega's and herbs can help for behavior?

Thanks! (BTW- we tried all the herbs which is a good place to start, ruled out

food allergies, had a behavorist help us but did end up needing medication. The

behavorist was a MUST for us and it worked!)

Blessings!
