Guest guest Posted October 24, 2005 Report Share Posted October 24, 2005 I hate to be disagreeable, but I've had a flu shot three times and all three times I became very ill. The symptoms were exactly like the flu I was trying to prevent, only more extreme. I always got so much sicker than the people who had the flu itself. What's true about vaccines for some people isn't what's true for all people. I also got a horrible case of rubella when they gave me a rubella shot after my daughter was born--with a full blown rash, high fever and joint pain that hung on for a long time. Sometimes I suspect that my whole RA/fibromyalgia problems originated there. It's important for people to pay attention to their bodies and approach vaccinations accordingly. I will never have another vaccine of any kind unless the disease is always fatal and it is easy to catch through casual contact. My kids had bad reactions to shots too. If you've had flu shots and they've worked for you in the past, then more power to you, but the people who say they got the flu from a flu shot aren't making it up. I will never get it again. I think washing hands frequently is a better way to go. My son makes drugs for Kline and he won't even get the flu shot. He told me it is just a guess that they have hit the right strain. This is just my thought and not for everyone. I think people have to make up their own minds about whether to get the shot or not. I am going to call my son and ask him what he is hearing about this bird flu thing. Some blame childhood vaccines for autism. I know there was a government program, The Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (you can prolly find it using a search engine) I know I was dx'ed with Lupus when I was 18 (I am now 46) and in approx 2000 I had to be vaccinated with all the typical vaccines for nursing school. DTP, MMR, Hib, Hep B, tetnus. exactly 10 days later I was hospitalized and began an extremely sudden and aggressive descent into the hell my rheumy calls my RA. It has not been confirmed or proven my RA is from the vaccines, but it also has not been ruled out. There is so much information for both sides of vaccine controversy. I am not sure of my own personal opinion, except I think much more investigation needs to be done. ANd yes, the flu vaccine is developed each year based on a prediction and monitoring of which particular strains seem to be predominant for any given year.and they may or may not be the strains that hit hard in any given year. BUT for some people such as those with HIV or certain cancers, any flu could be fatal....and for some the risk of becoming ill or getting a flu shot must be carefully measured. In normal healthy people most flu is an inconvenience at most..but in compromised people, it can be easily fatal. I owrked in a county nuring home one winter where we lost over 60% of our patient population to flu. It was a very scary season. Our nursing home was quarantined and staff had to stay and sleep there and staff who were not on duty were not allowed in and no visitors allowed. Guest guest Posted October 24, 2006 Report Share Posted October 24, 2006 My son (5) just had Flu Mist (nose spray instead of a shot). Two days later he had a low fever, but it was easily controlled with just one dose of Motrin. The next day he again got a low fever, but one dose of Motrin and he was fine for the rest of the day. The third day he had no symptoms. I don't know if this was a light episode (it's about 5 days early), or if it was just a reaction to the flu mist. Patty Flu Shots Are Flu Shots a good idea for kids with possible ? Are there any negatives that anyone knows of? Do most of you guys have your kids get them? My daughter had the shot last year but I feel like I am always questioning and worrying about everything. Thanks for any insight or advice! mother of ee(2.5) for now!
