Guest guest
Cassy, of course we're covered by the ADA, not that it does very much good. When it was first signed into law, it had some real promising teeth. If an employer had more than 25 employees, if it had contracts with the federal government, or a few other stipulations, they absolutely HAD to accommodate a disabled employee, spending up to $25,000 each person, " if they wanted to " ! When my doctor decided that I was not to travel, I was demoted and later laid off because " everybody has arthritis " . Also, the legal system and feds didn't accept RA as a disability or discriminatory disease. If the government had done their job properly, I would still be working or retired with a disability rather than existing on SSD only. I wouldn't have had to spend all our life savings, sold lots of things that were heirlooms, etc, just to afford meds and doctors and food while waiting more than 2 years to get a SSD ruling. One time we got food stamps for 3 months, and suddenly weren't qualified for them because of rule changes by the government. I was finally ruled 'unemployable' because I couldn't depend on being at work every day. The ADA has improved since then, so now you have a chance of defending yourself from discrimination by an employer, and there's finally a track record of lawyers ability to win discrimination cases stemming from RA sufferers. I sure wish I had those opportunities back then. Thank goodness our home was paid for also, that took lots of pressure off of us. Guest guest
Dear Judi, Maybe we could sell this book of insensitive comments and make some money and educate people at the same time. I am fantasizing about toilet papering the guy's house who made that unbelievably ignorant comment about your pain meds. Then I will move on to the guy from church and the person who doesn't know the difference between sustaining a gait and throwing a bowling ball. We all need to practice saying, " No offense, but that was an unbelievably ignorant comment. " I guess that's not really true. We get along better in society when we just cut these dudes some slack. I'd be completely alone if I said everything I thought. laura nonny46 <nonny46@...> wrote: Dear Bobbi, That really was an insensitive statement that woman made!! I think between us all we could compile a book of insensitive comments and people! There is a woman I know who told me several months ago she didn't understand why I was using a cane since I bowl. I may not bowl well, but it IS a night out, and it is only 5 steps to throw the ball! Then a couple of weeks ago she saw me taking my pain pills (we go out for snacks after bowling) and she said " If you didn't take so many pills maybe you wouldn't be sick!! " Several weeks ago a man at church, when they announced I was going to have surgery, said " Oh, there you go again, trying to get more attention! " Good luck with your rheumy appointment, and don't worry, things will NOT be as bad as the jerk said! Peace, Judi
