Awww, Jen. I'm so, so sorry. Gizmo was obviously a very much loved kitty and certainly knew he was too. I pray for peace in your heart as you mourn this terrible loss.

Hugs,

OT: Gizmo [1 Attachment]

Thursday I put my cat Gizmo to sleep. By Tuesday I knew I would have to do that for him. He struggled to walk, sit and to go up and down stairs (his litter box is in the basement.) He barely ate anything for over a week and drank very little water. He was so thin that you could feel every rib and vertebra. He would stumble into the kitchen and cry for food but he couldn't eat. He would lay around all day on the sofa or on the hamper in the bathroom. I took him to the Vet everyday last week and everyday this week for subcutaneous fluids (they are injected under the cats skin in his back, alternating sides.) For 5 years I took him to the Vet twice a week for fluids and they kept his kidney disease in check but now they didn't work. He had been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism at the beginning of December and I guess his body just couldn't handle it any more. Once his thyroid was under control his kidneys crashed. The Vet told me on Thursday that she could try IV fluids on Gizmo and that I would have to force feed him. I knew Gizmo would hate that and his life would be even more miserable! He looked so pathetic and sad. He whined when I touched him. Before his health deteriorated he was picking on my Mom by dumping the garbage in the bathrooms and chewing on every plastic bag he could get his paws on. When I would call him he would come running, so much for cats taking a message and getting back to you! He would follow me all over the house. He was such a big baby, he LOVED to be held like a baby. He would cry to be held and Siamese cats KNOW how to CRY. My Mom would hold him and he would lay his head on her shoulder and purr (he was a loud purrer!) and he would drool on her. I think he did that because he had a super long tongue and he wold sometimes stick his tongue out at me. One time when my mom was holding him he swatted at the toothpick in her mouth and I took a picture of it and he had wrapped his tongue around the toothpick! So funny!I couldn't watch him suffer any longer so I had the Vet put him to sleep. She gave me options and I decided to have her inject the euthanasia solution in his stomach. She said that way he would stay alive for 20 to 30 minutes and I could hold him and talk to him. Gizmo let me hold him on his back so that she could inject his stomach. Then, I held him like a baby and he relaxed in my arms, he even stuck his tongue out at me. He was so weak that he passed away in less than 5 minutes but he went so peacefully in my arms I didn't mind. I knew he was tired and wanted to go home to Heaven to be with my other pets and people he knew. It was VERY HARD on me and my Mom but I knew it was the right thing to do for Gizmo.Anyway, Gizmo was 14 yrs old, he was a Chocolate Point Siamese. You may think that's old but it wasn't. Gizmo was the baby of the family. My Blue Point Siamese, Mia is 19 years old, soon to be 20!I LOVE YOU Gizmo! JenP.S. It's too quiet in our house now.

Jen,

I'm sorry but I cried reading your post. It brought back memories from last July when I had to put my 13 year old Beagle Becky down. She was my life and the smartest dog in the world. She knew everything I said to her. She got up one morning and couldn't walk and barely move. We got her down to the vet and she had a cancerous tumor in her stomach. They said she would live only a couple of days. She was in pain, so it was time. I think we all know when its time for them. The one thing my grandma always told me was that they don't have to suffer like we do. They came in and I held Becky while she gave her the medicine. I kissed her face as she passed on. I had never done that before with a dog or human. I wasn't afraid, I loved her so much. She's buried out back and I bought her a stone that reads "Becky Loved Forever, Never Forgotten" and it has a beagle head on the top. I have another beagle who's 13 and has been having some health issues. I'm trying to just be thankful I have her now and not worry about tomorrow. She's still enjoying life and that's what counts the most.

It sounds like you did the right thing. I know how much it hurts and time is the only thing that will help you Jen.

Sending lots of hugs your way. ((((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))))))
