Guest guest
Hi Vicky, We have this for ds. Not using it very much at all. I can bring it over to show you, if you like. Patience > > Anyone using this? 's new class are pushing it but I'm not convinced it's going to be any use at all. My concern is he may just get confused as we are already doing talktools and signing, not sure what this can bring to the table for an auditory learner. > TIAVicky >
Guest guest
We use it Vicky. It's been brilliant for my son and I WISH the school had pushed for it, instead of me having to push the school. DS cannot speak, but using the Proloquo2go within his VB program has allowed to mand for many things. We've not gotten further than manding, but it is lovely to hear that electronic voice saying, " play with me Mama " and getting a nice look!! Having said that though, if you son is an auditory learner, it may not be the best approach. The sound that comes out of it can be a bit off. DS learns visually. He can scan the icons quickly and distinguish them very readily even on the ipod. We are trying now to teach him to spell, which will mean with the proloquo he will be able to say anything he wants, which would be a complete game changer obviously. I'm not sure what talktools entails, but IMO signing is limited to who ever can understand the signs. One of the very great things about proloquo is anyone can understand what your child 'says'. Guest guest
Thanks Patience, Anita, my doubts really stem from the fact that the communication tools he already has are not used so why would this? Talktools just gives him a voice but he does need to "want" to use it, same applies for signing. Scanning would be a huge faff for and if the desire to communicate isn't there then why would he make such a massive effort? What will do though is perform, he gives learnt responses, took me a while to realise they were just learnt and not proper interaction, so is I were to say to him "What happened"? He would say or attempt to say "fall down" whatever happened because he learnt this was the correct response previously. Anita there is no way in this world would ask anyone to play with him and maybe this is the difference between therapies, what addresses what problem, so giving over large amounts of time to prolouquetogo without addressing the bigger issue will only bring more learnt responses and possibly really enrage him with yet another demand. Having said all that I don't want to appear to be standing in the way of school trying something, however late in the day. So pleased tthis works well for your boy Anita, would love to know how many have success with it and why? Vicky Re: proloquotogo Hi Vicky, We have this for ds. Not using it very much at all. Guest guest
Well, I can tell you why I think we've been successful to smoe degree with it. In starting to use it, K was only required to mand for things he adored. So, there would only be about 4 choices and even those would change so that he didn't get bored with them. Over time he has learned to like more things (I myself am stunned by this as for a long time our experience had been that he only like about 5 things. These would change and something adored on Monday would be nothing to him Tuesday). I think CEASE is helping with that, emphasis on the think. Anyway, the proloquo is used mostly in therapeutic settings as it is harder to use in real life at the beginning. We used it on iPad at the start, as it is easier to see and touch, but now he has an iPod on a lanyard to keep around his neck. I highly recommend getting an iPod or iPad with a camera, as then you can add pictures instead of relying just on the icons provided by the program itself. DS uses a mix of icons and photos, but IMO the photos are easier to understand and more motivating. For me the best part of the program is that a person cannot outgrow it and you can adapt it on the spot, even a computer numpty like me can. Right now, ds has realized that if you want a special youtube video you can type in a command and get them. I do the typing but he holds my hand very carefully as I say the letters. I really do think that for him this is one of the most motivating ways to learn how to spell. I agree entirely that no device, etc is useful if the person has no desire to communicate. This has been an issue with ds and we were very lucky to find a therapist who is amazing in that way--she is very playful with ds and he really enjoys therapy with her. If the school is wanting to use it, would they be sending home the device for use at home too? Our school won't, but I had bought proloquo2go about 16 months before they got into it. I think using it at home for stuff that really rewards him would be key. Happy to chat about it some time on teh phone if you want :-) Anita > > > > Anyone using this?
