Guest guest
Have the doctors ruled out mini strokes or something like brain aneurysm?I was once woken up in the middle of the night but the worst possible headache at the back of my head, area of brainstem. It took my breath away (wanted to scream but couldn't) and made me hold skull tightly with both hands so that it doesn't fall to pieces! Silly now but that is what it felt like. That explosion of pain lasted a minute or so but took probably 30min for the pain to clear completely. It was VERY scary and I still remember it vividly and if you son is experiencing anything similar I can empathise with the fear and distress. The night before I was cooking something that called for grappa in the recipe, so to this day believe the headache (or whatever it was) was caused by those alcohol fumes. I don't drink spirits anyway and don't tolerate them so that could have been a trigger in itself. Was your son exposed to anything similar, any toxic fumes or alcohol etc?Hope you find some answers!Natasa Reply-To: "Autism-Biomedical-Europe " <Autism-Biomedical-Europe >Date: Fri, 8 Jun 2012 12:40:18 -0400 (EDT)To: "Autism-Biomedical-Europe " <Autism-Biomedical-Europe >Subject: new symptom - possible sub clinical epilepsy or similar? If anyone has any experience or thoughts on my son's new symptoms please let me know. He is 19 and his autism is characterised by sensory problems and anxiety. On Monday night then again last night he had episodes that were characterised by being unable to control his body/intense painful sensation at back of head so that he wanted his head to snap off/totally alert and conscious througout. During the 1st episode he also tried to hurt himself and us (he didn't want to but couldn't control his body) and felt suicidal. During the 2nd episode - even though the symptoms were as severe - we were able to keep him in bed and cool him down with cold compress on forehead and back of head. He was in deep distress though. We called the ambulance on both ocassions and on the 2nd ocassion took him to A & E. Blood tests were normal - ie no infection/liver function issues etc. Have been refered to neurologist but there will be a 6 week wait. My thoughts are that it is sub clinnical epilepsy - with overexcitation of brainstem/cerebellum. Anyone any ideas on anything we can do in short term that is better than A and E's suggestion that we take him to them during the episode. Obviously doing a lot of deep pressure massage etc to calm nervous system and looking at what we can do re constipation (nb 1st attack came on like a light switch after he had a BM. He has constipation - probably as result of proprioceptive gut motility issues) Thanks
Guest guest
Thanks Natassa That's really helpful information that I've been able to share with my son. Always helps him to know that other people have similar experiences. I'm coming to the conclusion he experienced very very painful migraines - driven by autonomic nervous system problems (fits with his symtoms and his type of autism). Been told that often get a massive drop in blood pressure at start of such a migraine. new symptom - possible sub clinical epilepsy or similar? Guest guest
My daughter has been having terrible headaches of some sort and they abated when I gave her a B vitamin complex with tyrosine and l-glutamine. It was very interesting watching the webinar about carbohydrate metabolism that someone has recently posted because it pointed out that good bacteria produce B vitamins and maybe your son's gut system is not balanced enough for adequate B vitamin production.
