Guest guest
Hi Fi, There does not seem to be any rhym or reason. Everyone will tell you how I sookied my first band. I wouldn't even stretch above my head or lift anything heavy, (no-one told me to do this, I just thought it would help it stay put).I never over-ate so therefore did not pb except on 3 ocassions in the beginning, however, it slipped. I often wondered if it was because I lost so much weight (65kilos) and because my stomach shrunk it came afloat?? I don't know but that doesn't explain the hernia. 2nd band has never been any good. I have not lost a kilo with this one and had dreadful reflux. The Dr. did tell me there was a lot of adhesions and scarring from the first band. It just does seem to happen to some (not all) of us. Anyway, even with all the hassles I would have my band over and over or any other surgery I may require. I still loved my first band and the sucess it gave me. I am a new girl!!!! Don't spend time worrying about this though, it may never happen and do not spoil the journey, I wish you the happiness and sucess I have experienced and also the joy at the rebirth of yourself, it's all wonderful stuff. Guest guest
Thanks Maree, The reason I asked is because my port has turned on an angle, my Dr can still get at it for fills, so there is no problems with it. I just wanted to protect it where possible, if I needed to. I was the same as you, no lifting or stretching just to be sure. My port turned after only 2 months, and I have had the band a little over a year now, and have lost 38kg so all seems to be fine. Again I feel so bad for you. I wish you all the very best too! Guest guest
The weight you took of will sure increase your chances of clearing the virus this time, plus the extended length of treatment.Sorry about all the health problems you had,but it sounds like it might work out for you.Have them explain about memory loss and balance being bad.The lawyer will get it done,it will take about two yrs but it will go through and you will be backpaid and the lawyer will probably get most of the backpay but it will be worth it to have the stability of a pention.Have a good new year and glad to hear your wife is really involved with your treatment. Gail Update J. Matchinsky 4508 Carpenter Ave. Des Moines, Iowa 50311 mmatchinsky@... December 27, 2008 Dear family and friends; As we approach the end of another year, it seems a good time for another update, blind-copied to many. I don’t remember who I told what, so if some of this is redundant, please understand. is still working as a pediatric pulmonary nurse (say that three times real fast) and is also the Coordinator of Methodist Medical Center’s Cystic Fibrosis clinic. Of course, she doesn’t get the time and resources she needs to do both jobs, but she works hard to stay on top of her patients problems. I feel terrible that I’m not able to help more around the house. My liver disease is getting worse. Currently, I’m undergoing my third round of treatment for the Hep C. This one consists of daily injections of interferon as well as high doses of an anti-viral medication. Because this medication kills my hemoglobin, I also take two injections a week of Procrit. This treatment will last 72 weeks and end in August. I’ve been diagnosed with cirrhosis and have the beginnings of jaundice. I have also developed hepatic encephalopathy. This is caused by the beginning of my liver failing; it can’t clean toxins from my system as it should. This is causing permanent neurological damage and affects my sense of balance, my memory, speech and my ability to focus. Funny, but I can write/type but now I stutter and have word finding problems when I talk. As my sense of balance is affected, I’m using a cane to walk to help steady my gait. I suddenly go blank and forget what I’m doing, but then again, I’m not getting any younger. There is good news as well. I have lost about 125 pounds since the first of this year. The doctor had told me that a transplant was inevitable and that at that weight, I wouldn’t be considered a candidate for the transplant. This motivated me. Since I’ve lost the weight my chances of sustaining a viral response if much improved. And if I am able to achieve Sustained Viral Response (SVR) my chances of needing a transplant go down to about 20%. I’ve always been a quick responder; just can’t maintain the response. That’s why we’re going 72 weeks. Last September I was in the hospital for five days. I was scared and called 911. The doctor thinks it was an acute attack of encephalopathy, brought on by dehydration. They kept me on IV fluids the entire time and gave me two units of whole blood. That’s about it; that’s my life at this time. Currently I’m waiting for disability. They turned me down, saying I had my arms and legs and so could not be considered disabled. My doctors just shook their heads. I have an attorney and we’ve appealed. I’ve also contacted my senators and congressman, asking for help. I can’t work; the memory and speech problems alone would make it too difficult, let alone the lack of energy. has been tremendously supportive. I actually am a very lucky man. I’m also grateful that all of you are part of my extended support system. Thank you. J Matchinsky J Matchinsky

Guest guest
Also got a lot of validation. DH was there today. The surgeon told him he married a "stud", LOL. He explained that he was impressed with the way I had handled the whole thing over such a long stretch. Well, that was cool to hear because it sure has been a challenge. I think we all are super impressed with the way you've handled this whole thing, . You are so STRONG! I'm happy to hear that you can walk. I know you're glad about that. Hang in there. It sounds like you have better news this time. ~~
Guest guest
Such an inspiration!!!!!!! So glad that one procedure is done, and I hope the other one goes as smooth as possible, and SUCCESSFULLY as well. Take care, and many hugs!D  Hi all,I'm home recovering from today's outpatient procedure to my spine, and it looks like I have another one coming up in a couple of weeks. It's kinda complicated, but I'm feeling hopeful. Doc says I should be able to resume my normal activities by the beginning of next year, and that if this gets fixed, it shouldn't ever recur. Meanwhile, I get to walk. I am supposed to hold off on anything else. I'm so GLAD I get to walk. It makes me happy. Each time I spend time in that post-op recovery room I can overhear what others are going through, and it's all sorts of sad stories, way worse than mine. Also got a lot of validation. Guest guest
So glad to hear that, and you are a true inspiration for dealing with this so gracefully over such a long period of time. Guest guest
That is GREAT news that these procedures should permanently remedy the situation, , and also that at least you can walk for the next couple of months! I agree, if you can only do one form of exercise, walking is the best choice! Please keep us posted! Guest guest
I've been resting lately. My foot was really painful earlier this week so I just decided not to do much. I did upper body Monday and didn't want to redo that Tuesday, I could have done something on the floor Tuesday and Wednesday but just didn't. Today I could have too but haven't yet and might not. I'm kind of enjoying not pushing myself and being a slug, I've been pushing so hard for so long in so many areas that slug-like behavior feels good for a while (I'll get bored of it soon though). My foot is finally feeling better today. I went back to the doc today too and he said the shot he gave me in the foot probably irritated the nerve more so this time he adjusted my orthotics (everything already feels better because of that) and gave me the 2nd shot (of 3) in the hip. Oh my goodness, that hurt(s) so much! It was 2 hours ago and my hip still feels sore! I will never think of my kids as wimps again when they get shots or afraid of them! I think when I was heavier and had fat on my hips it didn't hurt so much but oh wow, it did today! The one in my foot didn't hurt hardly at all when they did it though so maybe this means it really will help me feel better this time! Gotta go one last class soon for the last time for a week!!! Woo hoo!!! The kids want me to take them to the gym today (our 2 week passes started Monday and their winter break started yesterday) so I might go hang out in the pool with them. It won't be much of a workout, probably, but it will still be activity at least.
Guest guest
Hi , I have been taking it easy this week, too. Started w/ my weird back/hip thing on Sunday, rested because of that, then started coming down w/ a cold, and just been busy/stressed w/ work. Today I took a walk w/ my friend - we didn't do our full loop, but we did something. I think some down time is in order. Next week I may keep it low key, too, maybe some light cardio, yoga and Pilates. No need to stress, 'tis the season! What type of shots are you getting? Cortisone? I hope you feel better!!!Donna Subject: UpdateTo: exercisevideos Date: Thursday, December 22, 2011, 10:29 AM I've been resting lately. Guest guest
Sometimes its good just to slack off. Then when you come back to your workouts your stronger. The shot sounds very painful. I'm sorry you had to go through that. Guest guest
Hi Donna, Definitely no need to stress, too much of that going around already! I'm glad you're trying to take it easy too, sounds like you need it also! The shots are to calm the inflammation in the nerve, not cortisone though. The foot seems to be better today. I went with the kids to the pool (on our 2 week free pass at the gym near us) and since Miriam is essentially a non-swimmer I walked up and down the lane with her as she worked on her strokes and I'm not sure that was all that great of an idea because it did put a lot of stress on the feet without aid of my orthotics (doc told me to wear them as much as humanly possible, that even walking around on carpeted floors barefoot would be too much pressure). I guess I'll find out tonight/tomorrow. After about a half hour I did discover kick boards and introduced her to them so we kicked up and down the lane instead and that seemed like a better idea. I did two lengths of the pool too at full speed (the first one anyway) while she played in the shallow end alone for a few minutes and wow was that harder than I remembered it being. I swam swim team when I was in middle school and for a while in high school. Freestyle was my specialty but also backstroke and I did two lengths of freestyle. I forgot how much work that is to move through the resistance of the water! I'd love to be able to do that more often, on my own though, without a little one to watch over too. It is a great workout. When I was in college, I used to swim 1/2 mile every day at a leisurely pace, not like I tried today, but that pace sounded really appealing after trying to race my former self and just because it felt good to be in the water again. We have 2 weeks on this pass but I know the kids want to go too so I'm not sure how much I'll be able to use it alone. We'll see though. I'm already trying to figure out if we can budget in a family membership sometime in the future too. I don't know that I'll use anything besides the pool much but between me and the kids, the pool could get a lot of use and DH wants to use the gym equipment. Seems like a pipe dream right now but who knows, maybe I'll win the lottto (if I ever play it)?! :-) Btw, the foot seems better but shoot, the hip STILL hurts where I got the shot!!! I'm down to my lowest weight now in at least a year and was loving it until this morning. Now I'm wishing for a big cushion of fat on my hip again just because it might not hurt so much with that! I don't remember shots ever hurting like this before, this was also not a quick split second shot either though, it was a big needle and then more of a hold it there and sloooowly push the med in so I don't know that an extra layer would help all that much! Woo hoo!!! The kids want me to take them to the gym today (our 2 week passes started Monday and their winter break started yesterday) so I might go hang out in the pool with them. It won't be much of a workout, probably, but it will still be activity at least.
Guest guest
Hi Donna, take care! I hope you feel better! Cortisone? I hope you feel better!!!Donna Subject: Update To: exercisevideos Date: Thursday, December 22, 2011, 10:29 AM I've been resting lately. Guest guest
Thanks, ! I hope your back gets better soon, too. I have been a total slug this week and I'm fine w/ it. I think I needed a break mentally and physically. If my hip thingy hadn't gone out on Sunday I probably would have worked out all week but I ended up only working out 3X - Sunday w/ Fat Blaster, Wednesday w/ the recumbent and Pilates and Thursday w/ my long outdoor walk. Today I took a rest morning and enjoyed laying in bed w/ my coffee, dog and a book. I think we all need times like that every so often. Next week I'll get back to it, but may keep it light-ish - cardio & yoga/Pilates unless I get a sudden burst of energy after Xmas!Donna Subject: UpdateTo: exercisevideos Date: Thursday, December 22, 2011, 10:29 AM I've been resting lately. Guest guest
Hi , Yes, rest has been in order this week. It is funny how it works sometimes, if I hadn't injured my hip/back during Fat Blaster I probably would have worked out all week - but, in a way, it was for the best b/c the flare up didn't last long (I'm back to normal now!) but it made me slow down which is what I think I needed to do this week. So, I only formally exercised 3X - Sunday w/ Fat Blaster, Wed w/ the bike and Pilates, and Thursday w/ my outdoor walk. I will get back in the groove next week - but may do a lighter week of just mindless cardio and yoga/Pilates. I'm taking a couple of days off between the holidays and it will be nice to not push myself into anything.....just go w/ low-dread workouts! My friend and I may also get a chance to walk since her husband is off and said he would supervise a playdate between our daughters so we could walk. Yay! This morning I laid in bed w/ my coffee, dog and a book - it was heavenly!Who knows, maybe the gym membership will work out! and Miriam sound like the same swimmer. I'm going to see if I can have do some lessons this spring in anticipation of summer camp. She is not a really strong swimmer, but over this past summer she improved greatly. I think it was b/c of going to the pool every day at summer camp. I still make her stay in the shallow end when I'm not there. One camp we may try this summer does offer swim lessons, so I'm excited about that. she is getting better and is much better about going underwater now - but she just lacks the coordination and stamina. Oh well - in time, right? I'm a horrible swimmer, so I can't really complain about her swimming. I just want her to be safe. Take care!!Donna Subject: UpdateTo: exercisevideos Date: Thursday, December 22, 2011, 10:29 AM I've been resting lately. My foot was really painful earlier this week so I just decided not to do much. Guest guest
Oooh, you rest morning sounds wonderful!!! We do need those sometimes! I'm enjoying my slug-like week a lot and plan to get back it next week, provided all is well foot-wise (which it seems to be today)!
