Study of Autism Biomarkers and Genetics Do you have a son between the ages of 12 and 18? The Study of Autism Biomarkers and Genetics at the Center for Autism Research at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is looking for participants! Now scheduling appointments for the beginning of the new year and for spring break! What are the goals of this research study? Currently there is no medical test or quantitative measure that can be used to make a diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We want to determine whether a combination of brain imaging techniques, eye tracking measurements, and genetic markers can be used to make a definitive diagnosis of ASD, independent of the typical behavioral scales used in current practice. Who can be a part of this research study? Males between the ages of 12 and 18 may take part. We need individuals diagnosed with ASD as well as typically developing people for comparison purposes. Participants may not have metal in the body (such as braces or permanent retainers). Children with ASD must be verbal and may not have active, uncontrolled seizures. The study is particularly interested in participants who showed signs of ASD at or before the age of 8 and typically developing participants. What will participants be asked to do? Families will need to make at least two visits to the Center for Autism Research at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. We expect most participants will complete the study in two to four visits. Visits will take place over a 2-3 month period. Children participating in the research study will receive social, behavioral, intelligence (IQ), and other developmental testing. Children will also have magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and will be asked to give small samples of blood or cheek cells. Parents will be asked to answer questionnaires over the phone, in person, and on paper. What are the benefits of taking part in this research study? The results of this study may help develop cutting edge tools to diagnose people with ASD. Individuals who take part will receive a comprehensive evaluation and report. Families who take part will be paid for their time and reimbursed for their travel costs. I want to help! Who do I call? If you are interested in learning more about participation, please respond by phone or email with your phone number and the best time to reach you, and one of the members of the study team will call you. We wish you and your family a happy and healthy holiday season!
