Guest guest
Hi Margaret, I would feel so frustrated too- the needs/demands of autism are relentless. I'm glad that church is a place of refuge for you. Does your church offer any retreats in your area where you could get away for a weekend on your own? A family friend told me of a retreat center in Long Branch, NJ (at the Jersey shore) that offers various retreat weekends throughout the year. I find that I need to purposely schedule activities/time for myself whenever possible to " recharge my batteries " . If I don't, it can be too hard/overwhelming to do what is necessary to help . This is esp. true when the winter comes and the days are shorter- even a cup of coffee with a neighbor/friend and not talking about disabilities for a little while can sometimes be a good respite. Thinking and praying for all of us to find those moments of refreshment that we all need to keep going. I am soooooooooo fed up with this Autism crap....the inability to relate pain part. Last night, after the big football game that Gareth and Dad watched, I went to get him ready for bed. He wouldn't get up out of the couch and said *Arm hurt.* I looked at his arm.....the one that had the IV in for 3 days, and the sucker is red, swollen, blotchy, and 3 " of harden vein above AND below the IV site. It's 9:45 at night, for crying out loud!!! Off to the ER, for 2 1/2 hrs. The doc said phlebitis is very painful......why didn't he say something during the day?!?!? This didn't just happen while he watched TV last night.....it's been festering for 2 days!!! Geeeeeeeesssssshhhh!!! The, the doc was going to put him on antibiotics. I said *read the chart....he's on Ciprofloxacin already.* They sent him home and said to put warm compresses on it and give him pain meds. I'm off to Church.....my place of refuge anymore. Take care, Everyone, Margaret Mom to Gareth, 23 y/o, DS/ASD/OCD
