Hi Barbara,

Bus aides do not have the authority to decide what student can or cannot ride

the bus. Transportation is the responsibility of the school district and part of

a student's IEP, related service. The IEP team makes the determination regarding

what type of transportation a student requires. You are an equal member of that

IEP team. The school staff are most likely well aware of the transportation

issues. They may have chosen to ignore the situation than acrue an additional

transportation expense. It may be best to request an IEP meeting and discuss the

bus issue. I would recommend that a behaviorist observe your child on the bus or

whatever mode that is decided upon. Your child deserves and is in need of

positive behavioral supports. The district is responsible to transport your

child to and from school in a safe and efficient manner to meet your child's

needs. I always see red flags when a child doesn't want to go to school. It may

just be the ride

regardless but I would certainly observe him at school, ask other parents etc.

There may be something going on at school that is creating this issue.

Weekend respite camp? I've never heard of that around here, but it sounds

great! We send Elliott to a summer camp put on by the ARC and our local

community college, but it's only two weeks and we have to pay for a helper to be

with him ($700).

The bus aide said today that they're not going to be able to transport him if he

comes out kicking in the morning, which is almost every morning. Getting him

out of the house to go on the bus is the biggest fight you can imagine. It

takes both my husband and I, and we regularly get hit and kicked. We've tried

every positive reinforcement we know of at home, on the bus and when he gets to

school but nothing has made this time consistently better. So getting him in a

different school isn't the issue...it's getting him there at all! Even driving

him has become dangerous at times because it's so unpredictable when he's going

to have an outburst.

Has anyone else dealt with this issue with the bus? Thanks for the input!
