Bad bad week...

I saw my Rheumy for the 1st time a week ago. He put me on 10mg of

Methotrexate, 1mg of Folic Acid, and Ibuprofen. Of course I'm not

expecting this to start working yet, but the past week has been

progressively worse FAST! I can barely get out of bed in the morning,

and then I can't turn on the faucet to take a shower because my hands

hurt so bad! I also got these bumps on my elbows within the past 4

days, they look exactly like the rheumatoid nodules I've seen. There

are about 8 of them. Do they come and go? or are these here to stay?

I e-mailed my Dr. today about the new developments and maybe to start

Prednisone (he said to let him know when I was going to say " Uncle " ). I

think I am now. The side-effects of the steroids make me very nervous.

What have some of the side-effects been for any of you? and how severe?

Before saying uncle, your rheumatologist has many other options

without having to take prednisone if you don't want to. There are

other nsaids besides ibuprofen and there are pain meds. Prednisone is

helpful for nasty flares, and doctors prescribe them while waiting

for meds to start working, but long term they can cause more problems

and may not be worth the side effects. MTX can take up to 3 months

to start working. Yes the nodules come and go. I've had several that

come and go. Have you tried paraffin wax baths for your hands? I

hope you feel better and your meds start to work. Here's some info

on prednisone:
