Guest guest
Aloha Margaret, Aubrey, now 13, went through the same surgery (Tympanomastoidectomy) for both ears, but three months apart when she was 9 years old. Infectious disease specialist tried aggressive oral antibiotic Cipro to knock chronic pseudomonas infection out with no success, so Aubrey was also on intravenous antibiotics for several weeks to completely knock out the pseudomonas in the mastoid. Had to be on her every second of every waking hour making sure that she did not touch that ear(s). Know your pain! The thought of the possibility of that infection traveling into the brain at some point has always intrigued me since Aubrey's autism symptoms started six months post-surgery. Hmmm? Only drawback is that she has some interesting scars visible behind her ears when she wears a ponytail... Results varied with each ear, but for the most part surgery was very successful in that the infection problem improved dramatically. Aubrey's hearing improved from moderately impaired to mildly impaired in one ear, and in the other, her hearing is almost normal as a result. Four years later she has had only ear infection causing any concern. I hope Gareth's result is similar. Take good care... He's got a huge white cup over his ear and has to wear it till Monday. He's not too happy about that.....really bugging him having it on!!! I'll be lucky if I can get him to keep it on for today. The doc said the mastoid bone was infected and had polyps in it from the chronic ear infections. He took out the polyps, cultured the pus, and inserted a tube in. The doc was surprised by the polyps as the CT scan showed a normal ear. We have to wait two week for the hearing test to see if he still has hearing in that ear. Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. Take care, Everyone. Margaret Mom to Gareth, 23 y/o, DS/ASD/OCD

Guest guest
OMG Margaret, what comes to mind is a second opinion from an ear expert at Manhattan Eye & Ear. I am stunned that Gareth is still in pain and this is all the doc has to offer. I don't know what to say. Charlyne Subject: Heidi/Cyndi/Gareth update To: Date: Tuesday, October 25, 2011, 8:30 AM Â Hi, Everyone.....Heidi....how did make out with her surgery yesterday? Cyndi.....sorry to hear that you were in the hospital, too. Man.......you have had one rough year!!! I'd like some advice from the nurses, please. Perhaps you could ask some fellow docs their opinion. They did the mastoidectomy on Gareth 10 days ago. He is starting his 2nd Z-Pac because of the drainage/pain still there. Doc is now talking about taking the mastoid bone out......total hearing loss in that ear would be the result. There's got to be SOMETHING else they can do to save his hearing......isn't there? I have phone calls in for second opinions, etc. Of course, they return them at their convenience. Would putting him in the hospital, on IV antibiotics, help him? Prayers to all of us......I think we all could use them!!! Take care, Everyone. Margaret
Guest guest
Hugs to Gareth. And high five to Mom for knowing what her son needed.  Now why can't we get more doctors that listen and just do what Mom says? But I am glad that Gareth is now getting the care he needed (and that you could get a good nights sleep).  Hugs,  To: Sent: Wednesday, November 2, 2011 5:53 PM Subject: Gareth update  Hi, Everyone....tip toeing can also be an early sign of muscular dystrophy. As for pain, Gareth never acknowledged pain from his hip dysplasia till the one hip socket was completely eroded. He's got 5 pins holding that hip together now. An older cardiologist ( I'd say 60 +) came in this after to check on Gareth. He had read where he has a history of orthostatic hypotension and that his testing in the ER was negative for any OH. Well, Gareth had just walked the corridors for about 5 minutes and was doing his typical, laying out flat on the bed, straight as a board, dizzy. The doc asked how they checked him in the ER and we told him with the electrical, automatic BP machine. Well, he got out his own stethoscope and the old hand pump-up arm band for taking blood pressure. G's BP laying flat on the bed at that time was 110/60. He got the arm band pumped up again and told G to stand up. His blood pressure dropped to 70/40!!! He wants G on BP medicine to raise his BP..... before he busts his head open falling down!!! Ironically, his Dad takes meds to lower his!!! Basically, G's OH, combined with his inner ear infection, is wrecking havoc on his balance. Hopefully, he can come home tomorrow. Take care, Everyone.
