Guest guest
<< His receptive communication is only slightly delayed - meaning he understands us when we speak to him but he can't talk back. He uses pictures, sign language and more recently a communication app on an iPad (he touches the pictures and it speaks for him). We're wondering why it is that he doesn't talk and if there's anything we can do to promote it. He's overcome so many other hurdles but this one stumps us. Any ideas?>> Hi, Everyone.........Your son is like so many of our kids. Gareth could always understand so much more than he could express. He has periods of times when he does talk more than others and we usually end up finding that meds help. He did start *talking* when Risperdal was added to his meds at age 10 ....before that, it was echolalia, growling, pointing, and talking while reading. It was such a pleasant surprise to find out in 1st grade that he could read. He could read and talk, but couldn't turn around and say the sentence without seeing the word. & Desi....I am so glad you two have each other for support...even if you are on separate islands!!! ....we moved many times over the years while Gareth was in school. Out of the 6-7 school districts, we only had one nightmare of a district. All others were great for inclusion and support services. Is it possible to get into another district? Take care, Everyone, Margaret Mom to Gareth. 23 y/o, with DS/ASD/OCD
