Guest guest
Hi Marie, That's exactly my situation. Yesterday I thought he would make it all day with a dry pull up but, right before bed he pooped and peed in his pull up. Sometimes he feels like telling me and other times he cares less. Thank you for sharing with me. I guess we keep moving forward & nbsp; Good luck & nbsp; Sent from my Palm Pre on the Now Network from Sprint On Sep 2, 2011 1:34 PM, marie1330 & lt;liam.owen.mom@... & gt; wrote: & nbsp; HI , We are still at the potty training stage with my son,Liam, who will be 8 this coming week. Guest guest
Hi - My daughter turns 12 tomorrow and has had very little success with potty training. There has been progress on urine, but we had to go back to GoodNites pull-ups full-time because of a complete inability for her to control her bowels at all. We've been to multiple doctors, and the last one told me that there are some things they can't fix and this may be one of them. It's basically a suspected spinal nerve or motility issue. We see a new specialist next Friday and will see what tests he wants to do, etc. Theresa - Northern VA ________________________________ To: Sent: Friday, September 2, 2011 2:34 PM Subject: Re: successes in pottie training  HI , We are still at the potty training stage with my son,Liam, who will be 8 this coming week. Guest guest
We saw at least two gastro people re the bowel issue. But what i have learned is that doc's can 'fix' what they know or have learned. `I believe after hearing reams about - too low IQ, over flow from constipation, and use of various medicament, that my method worked better. I believed that Elie did not have the sensation which told him that his rectum was full. HE did know when his bladder needed emptying. So, we taught him from the very beginning to SIT in the bathroom. After all, some of those bladder sensations could transfer to the rectum and teach the lower abdomen to push./ Sometimes we succeeded. Eventually he learned. BUt I did away with medications - it was apparent to me from day to day up close and personal with feces that this child was not constipated, having overflow, etc. So we used a timed method - starting with wake up and then 30-45 minutes thereafter the whole day. After 2 weeks, we went to one hour - as his bladder could hold 1 hr. YEs we had bowel accidents - especially when stressed. But after I took the emotion of bowels as something I needed to stress over and made just another developmental task, Elie did better. Daipers might possibly have made the school happier, but I believe learning would be retarded. And Elie learned not to like being dirty before he learned not TO BE dirty. I believe that would not have happened with diapers. Side note - we removed all carpets because there is nothing nastier then trying to feces smell out of rugs! At one point, I put roll linoleum over the carpet (rented house) to keep his bedroom carpet clean. Good thing I developed that attitude because it was a long time from 6 sets of clothes a day down to one set very occasionally. What I can say is that it is just a developmental task like breathing and chewing and swallowing, walking - each child has his own pattern. It mustn't become a battle - nothing is worth that, IMHO. Guest guest
Hi, I have two things to think about. First we have 's story. He had progressed nicely but then stalled. He had these intermittent accidents, and only pooped in the shower. Someone here mentioned constipation, and I found out that constipation can cause urinary incontinence. We started him on Miralax and he was trained within a couple of weeks. He has occasional accidents but for the most part, he's clean and dry every day. (his little sis also needed Miralax to train...she was dry but pooped in her pants every day...after the first week on Miralax, she hasn't had another accident at all. My second thought, if you're sure that constipation isn't a factor, is he may need to drink a lot more. 's big brother , who has Asperger's syndrome, had a very very hard time learning to stay dry. We went to a pediatric urologist and he said that it was very important to make sure that drank enough water. The Dr explained that when a child has low tone (which did), it can affect the spinchter muscle that opens to let urine out. The child won't feel thay they need to pee and may not realize that anything has come out. The muscle is made stronger when the child is kept very well hydrated. Then when the muscle is stronger, the child can learn to feel, and control when the urine comes out. I don't know if this is what's happening with you, but it definitely helped . We also learned that there are some drinks that irritate the bladder and can cause " accidents " ; one of them is lemonade ('s favorite). We recently forgot about this and started sending him capri sun lemonade at school, and he immediately started having accidents again. Ugh. Anyway, if the timed schedule isn't working, maybe there's something else impeding his progress. Hth!
