Guest guest
OK - take a deep breath - this is fixable. Go to doc - or talk to his get things done person. You need a letter of medical necessity that says: XXXXX, a young man who suffers from heat instability will be at great risk of heat exhaustion were he not in an a/c bus and classroom. IT is his medical need that he requires a/c because his body is unable to adjust to heat. Have him sign it. Take it to school but do not relinquish it - let them see it, make a copy, but you keep the original. Request an IMMEDIATE IEP meeting. You might mention compensatory education time for days missed because his needs were not being met. Generally I have found you won;t actually need the meeting, but the letter needs to get high enough up the food chain - start with principal or if that person is not agreeable, special ed director - or in one school district, I started at the superintendent's office. Depends on size and attitude. Elie had a private car, hired by the school district for him and one other student for part of one year in a district which had no a/c buses. Yes, transportation makes rules, BUT, you now have a letter of medical necccesity > ** > > > So my son officially started school on Sep. 9th I though mostly everything > was going to be ok well it was not like always. Guest guest
Get a note from his physician stating that air conditioning is required when the temperature exceeds 75 degrees. It doesn't have to have a listed diagnosis, just that it is required for your child. They have to respond to a medical necessity. Not only will this force the issue with the bus, but also will ensure air conditioning in every class, with a back-up plan for power failure. (We have ice packs, a battery operated fan, and bottled water). I got the letter, and there is a portable air conditioner in every room she is in, as well as on the bus. I have a horrible school system, but they do listen to doctor's orders. > ** > > > So my son officially started school on Sep. 9th I though mostly everything > was going to be ok well it was not like always. Guest guest
heat instability: face gets flushed(red faced) , may be no sweating (my son) or profuse sweating, lethergy, body temp rises (can actually be monitored on a thermometer), may break out in heat rash (tiny red, prickly rash, itchy usually. Can progress swiftly to heat exhaustion. Treatment: - remove from heat. Cool quickly - water to head and neck and feet. remove shoes and socks , remove shirt at least or wet shirt , sit in shade, enter cooler room. Offer cool drinks. If child is unresponsive, may need removal to ER! This is a life threatening emergency. > ** > > > What does it mean to have heat instability? is that a condition? if my son > gets bad in the heat does that mean he's has heat instability? > > > > > > > > > ** > > > > > > > > > So my son officially started school on Sep. 9th I though mostly > everything > > > was going to be ok well it was not like always. Guest guest
The medical term is called anhidrosis. Maddie has it, and it's written in her IEP. Believe it or not, it was the main reason she was approved for approved private schooling 11 years ago. Guest guest
Wow - with her behaviors? We got great accommodation in every state because of the ANHIDROSIS, but we got APS because of behavior when in PA. . > The medical term is called anhidrosis. Guest guest
I know Sara. Problem was we had a nasty woman at the transition meeting (it was the only time I ever cried at an IEP) who didn't want to budge for a second. Remember, this is Philly!!!! I had fabulous supports there with me, who went to the wall for us, arguing with this bitch (sorry) for FOUR hours. This woman was so hot....I remember practically screaming at her, " YOU HAVE NEVER MET MY DAUGHTER; HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY KNOW YOU CAN KEEP HER SAFE " . It was brutal. Finally, when we sorta backhandedly threw out the anhidrosis, she caved, saying that since Maddie definitely would require ESY and Philadelphia couldn't guarantee an air-conditioned classroom, she'd sign on the dotted line. Crazy woman signed, and promptly walked out of the meeting!!!! I can't remember her name but can picture that wrinkly mean face!!! Arlene somebody or other. I can still get bugged thinking about her after all these years.....LOL Donna > Wow - with her behaviors? Guest guest
And I thought Coatesville was crazy . They wanted Elie in a regular h/s in an interior classroom on a main hall. The classroom was so small that there was only sidle room between one grooup of desks. No down time area, no bathroom, Just desks right against each other. We visited, Elie did his SFD, and then started bleating. We were out of there. On to the IU k-12 school. But that was still not right - 2 weeks of that approx and we were looking for your placement! Guest guest
Thanks for all the help, I was going to get a letter from the pediatrician today but had problems with our insurance and we could not be seen I hope I can fix it soon because this means Eli will be on a longer vacation than expected. > > > > > > > ** > > > > > > > > > > > > So my son officially started school on Sep. 9th I though mostly > > everything > > > > was going to be ok well it was not like always. Guest guest
This is an update on this issue. I was only able to get a note on a prescription pad that say's that My son is very heat sensitive in hot weather and should be in an air conditioned environment. Doctor said this is the best he can do for me. Tomorrow I will take a copy to the school and request for them to implement it on the IEP I hope they don't give me more fights in getting this new accommodation down on the IEP. My son just wants to go back to school. > > > ** > > > > > > So my son officially started school on Sep. 9th I though mostly everything > > was going to be ok well it was not like always. Guest guest
That may be enough. Now think about looking for a doctor who is more accommodating to an obvious need of your child. Not to bad mouth the wonderful doc's on this list, but there are some real turkeys out there masquerading as doctors. > ** > > > This is an update on this issue. Guest guest
I'm really hoping it is enough if not I will be going back and asking for more. I believe my child is the only special needs child he sees. I took reports for the child psychologist that diagnosed my son also with Autism and he was like no he does not have Autism but he's not the specialist so I'm not going to argue that with him. > > > > > > > ** > > > > > > > > > > > > So my son officially started school on Sep. 9th I though mostly > > everything > > > > was going to be ok well it was not like always. Guest guest
I spoke to the assistant principal about putting the accomodations on the IEP. The first thing he said was it can't be done it's not an educational accomodation. I informed him that it has been done so therefore he can. He told me he had to make some calls first, so I called him back to make sure he is doing something about it and infact he did speak to someone and told me that we will need to hold the IEP then have it reviewed by some LAUSD doctor to be approved. I told him I faxed all the information to his office so he can get started. I just wonder how much longer till Elias goes back to school. > > > > > > > > > ** > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > So my son officially started school on Sep. 9th I though mostly > > > everything > > > > > was going to be ok well it was not like always. Guest guest
On Elie's IEP it went under " other accomdations " . Guest guest
Thanks, he was talking to me like I was crazy and said is that the only reason he's not in school? Yea. Guest guest
I say take it to your local news station and I'm sure something will get done. My daughter arrived home drenched in sweat one day for the same reason -no a/c. I expressed my concern of a possible heat stroke and the potential liability on their hands and fortunately transportation did something about it. I communicated directly with the superintendent, though. Virginia Sent from my IPhone. > I spoke to the assistant principal about putting the accomodations on the IEP. Guest guest
Just be aware that the school CAN decide to report you for TRUANCY. Guest guest
Yes I'm afraid of that, what can they do if they report me for TRUANCY? I called my son's pediatrician and I'm hoping they will give me a letter for excused absences for the last 2 weeks (he also has had an infection). They said no problem but I'm waiting for them to call me back. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ** > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > So my son officially started school on Sep. 9th I though > > mostly > > > > > > > everything > > > > > > > > > was going to be ok well it was not like always. Guest guest
It really depends on the mood and the place. Can report you to DFCS as a neglect issue, can give you a warning to return to school, can do nothing because they are glad not to have him. I have been reported to DFCS and been 'investigated' twice - only to have the investigation closed. > ** > > > Yes I'm afraid of that, what can they do if they report me for TRUANCY?
