Are there grants that parents like us can apply for to attend such things?

Subject: DS/ASD Conference in Colorado

Hi, everyone!!! I just spoke with Robin Zaborek from the DS-Autism

Connection and she wanted me to let you all know that they apologize for

only holding a 1-day conference but being it is the 1st of hopefully many

more to follow, it was somewhere to start. With this being said, she wanted

me to tell you that they are hoping that if not next year, the following

year they will do a 2 day conference with more great sessions at a hotel..so

accommodations will be more readily available for the group.

After chatting with Robin for a bit, I mentioned our dual picnic many of us

attended years back, and she said that she definitely wants to hook up with

and possibly hold annual picnics here on the east coast, with conferences on

the west coast..

I am planning on putting a can outside my door to collect funds so I can get

there...

Desi: They are offering scholarships for the conference itself... You can

contact them about that. I am TRYING desperately to convince the county to

pay for my airfare and hotel with funding Tori was approved for (but they

typically don't pay for this stuff).

The county?? How??

I feel like I'm seriously not getting the services we should get. Medicaid

would be a nice one...a behaviorist, respite. I have a call in to the DDD to

talk about a monthly " mom's day out " respite program. I'm going to ask what

else I'm missing out on..

I get absolutely NOTHING here in NJ. No, wait...every two years I can submit a

list of non-medical expenses...respite care, special needs classes, camps, and

programs, to the DDD. Regardless of what is on that list, I usually get a check

for about $1500, to last the two years until the next check. Which is a nice

gesture, but doesn't go very far in a place where babysitters start at $10/hr!

The behaviorist from school is doing parent training. So I'm learning how to

help ...but I do have 3 other kids. High on my wish list is an ABA

person to work with , daily, on home/community skills. But insurance

doesn't cover that, so...

*sigh*

: I think a while back we had a discussion on here as to where the best

support services were for our kids, and from what I remember PA. came out

close to the top....Surprised the heck out of me, but was happy because at

that point we were looking to move out of PA...and then decided against it.
