I didn't even think of telling you where I am! Ha! That's how well my brain was

working. I live outside of the Dallas/fort worth metroplex. Close enough to get

to specialists, but far enough out to not have more than 1 neighbor. I have been

reading posts over the last week, and I'm glad to see I'm not the only single

mom dealing with the every day struggles of having a differently abled child!

Hi Vaish,

Welcome to the group! I wanted to tell you that my son share's you son's

birthday tomorrow. will be 14 tomorrow.

Terry

New to the group

Hi All,

I am new to this group. My son, Sid (Siddhartha) will turn 4 tomorrow.

He has Down Syndrome and has just been unofficially diagnosed with Autism.

As I am sure is the case with everyone else, a lot of his delays were

attributed to DS, which seems to be an all-pervasive label for anything that

is wrong with him. It is only in the last month that I suspected autism, and

when I asked his SLT and OT, they confirmed that suspicion.

As I do more research, it is clear that Sid is quite autistic, and we

just didn't know. He is non-verbal, and non-communicative. His gross motor

skills are decent, though his fine-motor could use some help.

I am thrilled to have found this group, and even more thrilled that it

has this large group of members. Is it very common to have language delays

in this group of kids? Do we have any kids that talk? I am really not sure

what hope to hold out for his future. I feel put back to the day that Sid

was born and I learned of his extra chromosome. In the days that followed I

have never once regretted the Trisomy, but now I am not sure what to expect

any more.

Well, this is a long message already. I had just wanted to say " Hello

Everybody " !

Regards,

Vaish (mom to Sid, 4)

Vaish - welcome to the list.

Where are you. Some of us have found it helps if we are near some other

families - to share war stories- but also to learn how the system where you

are works.

Speech. My son had 2 words until age 5. Rabbit and mother - both in a

language other than English. I found my notes form those years - I sent a

20 wowrd list of words in Hebrew that he responded to although he didn't

speak. Now at almost 26, he speaks in short blocky sentences. Definitely

can get his needs known. One verbal trick he uses is that he will form a

question of what he wants us to ask him. IE: Did you have a good time

playing golf? Are you feeling sick? Are you hungry?

Ah also used baby sign (approximations of ASL) for nouns and verbs when he

was younger. HE gradually dropped sign as he learned how to talk. Sign

was key in helping him learn not to tantrum - tantrums being his frustration

at not being understood.

We love to chat on this list - feel free to join in.

Sara, Mom of 6, Elie is the youngest, age almost 26 . Lives with his friend

caregiver in the NORth GA mountains.

He loves to order food in the restaurant, but then he gets stuck and starts

to stutter while giving the wait person his order. Usually he speaks pretty

clearly, but not in restaurants!

Chester County had the BEST help for parents thru their MR/DD county

office. I bet they have contact lists as well.

The ARC has a nursery as well - altho I will not vouch for the quality.

Loved our time living there - 2000-2006.

Thanks for the information .  Noah just turned 11 last month and is going

into 5th grade.  We are thinking of buying a house since the housing is limited

for us.  The new housing on Little Creek in Bradford Cove looks great, but I

haven't heard good things about the school system.  There really isn't any

other housing options, and I think my husband is dead set on buying.  I will

check out Chesapeake schools. Thanks for the information.

NORVA is cheaper than Chesapeake. Don't know what is going on in

Portsmouth. Va Beach HAD year round schooling - don't know if the whole

district is doing that.

We bought 3 houses in NORVA in the off and on 16 years we spent there. Want

particulars about neighborhoods there, I can help. Can't help with the

other cities, but people on the DS group CAN> and will. There are a few

Navy wives in the group.

One thing - check to see if the school district you are considering has

individual governance. IF they do, then you have to check EACH school as to

their philosophy, attitude, parent involvement, etc. We deliberately picked

outside Gate 4 to ensure the school for Elie and the h/s for our older son

still with us.

Welcome Katy.Your child - any of them - is not a monster! I'm horrified *for* you.We have such a wide variety of kids and families and cultures here. One of the key elements to this group - that I hope has been retained during my absence - is acceptance and respect for each person's perspective.

That means the word " should " likely doesn't show up too much!Take some time to cruise our archives and get to know us. It's been a little quiet lately, but I find this to be a very accepting and *smart* group of people.
