Dear , Sherry and Everyone,

Brook is continuing to talk, today I picked him from Round Table Pizza to

take him to be fitted for his orthotics and he was asking for pizza. It is

really hard to believe, but for some reason he seems to be making a lot of

progress suddenly is this area. He has never tried to speak much at all or

even imitated much more than a few sounds until now and he just turned 11

last Saturday. His teacher gave me a whole list today of words that he can

say and words that he is learning to say.

She said that yesterday for just one example as he was going home he said

" I want bus and 'I want to go home " . Today he spontaneously said " I want

drink " . All of this is really amazing to me, but we are going to work hard

at home and school to try and encourage him to speak when he wants something.

I really don't think he was capable of this earlier, something seems to have

clicked with him recently. His teacher also said that he can now imitate a

rhythm on a drum which he couldn't do before. She says this is a precursor to

speaking.

Also yesterday we had our yearly meeting with Brook's caseworker from

the Regional Center (where we get diapers and respite from here in CA) and

she is going to set up an appointment with a psychiatrist who diagnoses

autism for Brook. It was supposed to happen last year but we moved and they

had a waiting list, etc. Anyway, any suggestions on what information or

articles I should take with me besides Disability Solutions?

Leah,

No, Brook isn't on any meds except Lamictal which is for seizures. He

hasn't had any seizures since November when he had 9 seizures one morning. Of

course he's also on Augmentin and Tobradex for chronic sinus and ear

infections too.

One of the reasons I want to get him diagnosed though is that I'd like

to think about trying him on some meds. He is still obsessed with spraying

water, which is a huge problem at our house. I am hoping there is something

that can take this obsessive desire to spray water away. Also I really want

to get a medication that can help calm Brook down for haircuts and dental

appointments, etc., which are a nightmare.

I took him to the dentist about 2 weeks ago and he still hasn't gotten

over it. Today at his physical therapists appointment to get cast for his

orthotics he was really terrified which is unlike him. He is usually pretty

uncooperative, but not terrified. I'm sure he is still remembering his

recent dentist appointment and haircut. He is really afraid of being held

down. Of course if someone we're holding me down I'm sure I would react the

same way. At least we only have to cast his orthotics once a year and his

dentist is going to try putting him out with Versed at his next appointment.

But, it sure would be great to get some help with these behavior problems

that really interfere without lives.

i am so happy about brook's communication. i bet your thrilled to death, iw

ould be.... he isnt on any meds is he????? just curious....leah

I am sorry Brook is having a rough time with appointments. many of us have

been there and still are. I used to think I was a bad mom because i went

FIVE years without taking Ashton to the dentist. But i made sure she brushed

three timesa day at home, not always witha toothbrush, sometimes a nail

brush, or a scrubby pad or a sponge, whatever she mouthed i would put a bit

of toothpaste on or dip the sponge in mouthwash and she would suck on it.I

know its not your typical pokemon toothpaste with scoobydoo brush, but it

worked for us. i finally took her to the dentist last week, i felt she was

ready to face the situation. i was all prepared for hell. boy was i

surprised. we went in to the cleaning area and ashton sat on the stool and

told me to lay in chair. she kept saying " mommy sit down, me here you there "

:-) finally i dumped her butt in the cleaning chair(i think i have permanent

back damage now she is 95 lbs) i held her legs down, but she finally relaxed

i let go. they did a complete cleaning and the dentist looked over her mouth

with no help from us. she just layed there saying over and over " alldone "

heheh only one cavity in her nine years made me not feel so bad. he said she

has great teeth, but was to put her under to fill cavity and do xrays and

sealant on molars, so we do that in march along with ear surgery eye surgery

and that is all... my question has anyone did the tongue surgery, where they

take a part of the tongue off so its smaller>>>>>> ifso please let me

time on a yearly basis,

thats great!!! incidently pizza is one of the few things nathan repeatedly

asks for lol, actually he says " iiiizza hut " , even when reading when he

sees the word pizza he alsways says pizza hut, lol, cant break him of it

yet. shawna.

nathan use to be a nightmare for barber and dentist too, and often has had

versed at docs, but eventually he got over it, it use to take four of us and

the barber to cut his hair, he would get up in the chair and stuff but had a

real prob when they start cutting his hair, but he barber been hubby's since

baby too was patient and has had many boys who are normal dothe same didnt

mind and cut very fast, eventually nathan started not minding the haircut

but couldnt sit more than a minute now he sits longer and will ask if " all

done " but we just keep incouraging him, your doing great almost done, if he

does great we take him for a minipizza for a reward. good luck. shawna.
