We have the gorilla car seat for Maddie (hate that name). It holds

occupants up to 120 pounds (course, she's still a peanut, but I wanted

something to last). It costs $640, but I got $500 of that through FDSS

funds. I am going to be registering for new funds for the year '01 and

was thinking of getting that stroller???? MaClaren, it's called I

think???? Anybody here have it?? What's your opinion? We didn't bring a

stroller when we went to DW last week, intending to just rent at the park.

Problem was that we had to take a bus to each park from our hotel and waiting

in those bus lines with our little princess was absolutely BRUTAL to poor

Duff. So I called the hotel and they delivered a stroller I rented from

downtown Disney. Made ALL the difference. Maddie is still so hard to

contain and small that I think we'll make use of a stroller for a while.

Here I am responding to my own post....LOL But I wanted to add that we do

have a great coach. One of those three wheelers (joggers). My SIL had

bought it for us because Maddie was getting bigger and sticking her foot down

and stopping the wheels on regular strollers. The three wheelers are nice

because she can't do that. However, they are BIG and not compact, and so we

just couldn't bring it with us!!

Donna,

We got the Convaid stroller for . I don't remember exactly why I

liked it better than the McClaren. I think it was because we were looking

for a more " all terrain " type of stroller that we could take camping and for

hikes. The Convaid is available with the bigger wheels for that. The down

side is that it costs about $1900. We were able to get Regional Center

(state) funds and CCS (Calif. Childrens Services) to pay for it.

An alternative to a car seat (if funding is not available, since they are so

expensive) is the harness they use on the school buses. Our school district

gave me the number of the local distributor and they can be purchased for

about $100.00. They are sized to fit the child and anchor to the frame of

your car.

We got a recaro monza reha for Aden. It is a special needs seat, our insurance

required that it be designated as a special needs seat in order to pay. I called

the insurance and told them I had a script for one and asked how to get one they

told me which provider to go to locally. If you don & #39;t have a local provider

they may have you use someone national or they may have you purchase the seat

yourself and then they reimburse you.

I definitely recommend the recaro monza reha car seat if your little guy has

problems with heat too. It is the coolest seat available because it has mesh on

the sides for ventilation. And as a neat bonus it has built in mp3 speakers ;)

We got the Graco Nautilus 3-in-1 car seat ($137.98 at Walmart). It converts 3

ways:

1) 4-position 5-point harness car seat (use from 20 - 65 lbs)

2) Adjustable high-back belt-positioning booster (use from 30 to 100 lbs)

3) Backless booster (use from 40 to 100 lbs.)

It is rated for higher weights than most car seats or booster seats. Our son is

5.5 years old and is still under 65 lbs even though he is taller than most kids

his age with DS. We are still able to use the 5-point harness with him since it

adjusted 2 positions higher than most other car seats. The headrest also

adjusts much higher than most car seats. Once he hits 65 lbs we'll have to take

off the 5-point harness and start using the seat belt with it. The adjustable

height headrest has a built in belt positioner that keeps the seat belt in the

right position for their height. We can use it that way until he reaches 100

lbs. Don't know what we'll do after that, but we'll have to deal with that when

the time comes.

our kids grow and still need car seats what do we do? I have call all the

providers that are listed as suppliers of the special car seats within 25 miles

and none have them. So does this mean I need to buy a $1,000 car seat on my own?

or can something be done? I'm a bit lost I'm sure I can get a pediatrician to

We have the High Back Booster Car Seat from Safety 1st @ Costco and it say it

can hold up to 40 to 100 lbs but he is getting big for it he is only 45 lbs but

I don't know the straps are the ones that are becoming small for him I just

adjusted it again and I think we are good for maybe 4 months but I would really

like for the insurance to pay for one of those car seats made for older

children. It's important for his safety and mine to keep him in one, this kids

hits me with anything while I drive anything he can get his hands on this

including his shoes and cloths anything.

If you're looking for a regular 5 point car seat that holds a larger child (not

a special needs seat) there are a couple on the market. The recaro prosport

($225-$300) has the highest weight I could find for use with the harness 90lbs.

Also the britax frontier 85 ($225-$280) for use with the harness up to 85lbs.

If you want to go the insurance route and get a special needs seat they can go

up to 150lbs depending on the seat.

I found that a lot of the locally available seats were really deceptive, because

they say that the seat is for a child up to 100lbs, but when you look really

close that is for use as a booster with your cars seat belt. As an example the

safety first seat at costco says up to 100lbs but if you check the specks it

says the max for use with the 5 point harness is 40lbs.

Hope this helps,

Wow I never though of it like that I guess thats it, I was breaking my head

thinking how was it that it can hold a 100 lbs child if he almost outgrows it at

45 lbs. thanks for that input :o) I will check again to see if I can find the

right one this time.

Question about seats....Can you use the harness AND the car seat belt...or is

that dangerous?? I had been doing that since Wesley was getting the harness off

of his shoulders so I used the seat belt over the seat instead of behind the

seat so as to make sure he stayed in....he for some reason does not mind the

seat belt on him ....it is just the harness that he takes off...

AND could I use strong velcro to keep the harness on ...so that he cannot slip

it off.....I think I need to go through a safety check as this discussion is

making me wonder if I am doing things properly....

is 6 and only about 40#. He's the same height as his sister, I think

about 42 " . He's just tiny. We have a Britax seat for him in the van, I think

it's the Decathlon. It has a 5-PT harness to a pretty high weight, then

converts to a high-backed booster.

In DH's car, we have a Britax Boulevard. It also has a high weight limit for

5-PT harness, and converts to a booster.

Hi Annie, everyone, It is dangerous for ANYone to put the shoulder belt behind

them. I wonder if your way of positioning the car belt will hold the car seat

securely enough? When my son was getting out of the harness, I used a Twixit

clip,(they are inexpensive and have many uses!)from Pampered Chef, and put it

just a few inches below his chin. Legal, safe, I don't know, but I believe

safer than not being in the harness. Depending on your son, maybe just tying a

string around it would work. I can't think of anything siimilar to the twixit

clip, but if you look at at them online, you may get an idea.

In our county, Saratoga, NY, the county has a person trained to evaluate and

teach you how to install and use your carseat. They even provided a friend with

a new carseat when it was discovered the one he was using was all wrong for him.

Might be worth checking around.

I used the EZ-on Pro harness from about 5-12 years, first with a booster seat

then just in the car, as Nick wanted to put the shoulder strap behind his head.

I am sure they have sizes for larger kids, as well, in cases where they can be

dangerous to the driver or other kids in the back seat.

Hope this helps!

Joni, Nick's mom

Nick is 14 DS/ASD

From Saratoga County, NY, anyone else live here??
