Guest guest
Liz, Hey 's ABA therapist suggested getting a gait belt like they use for elderly people during therapy. I put it up under his armpits, then I position his feet under him with knees bent and count 1,2,3, and pull him up to a stand. It is much easier than the other tugging a pulling. Now I don't even need the gait belt when he drops I positions his feet, and count 1,2,3 holding his hands and he stands up. Take away a favorite treat and the only time she gets that brownine, or cookie, movie or whatever is when she stands up like she is supposed to. In the beginning I let have his moment of stop, drop, and flop, so he can melt down and then make him stand. I used the counting to get him to get out of the tub. When was little I used to count 1,2,3, and he would jump in the pool so I suggested to therapist using the counting because knew he was supposed to do something on the count of three. It worked for me and I hope it works for you. I too have injured my back, and one I expect I will be in a wheelchair. Oh in Ky you can call the Fire Dept once a month and ask for a Lift Assist when you need help getting someone out of a car and into the house or out of the house and into a car. Call your local Fire Dept and ask it can't hurt. I hope this helps. http://www.dynamic-living.com/product/gait-belts/#clear http://www.ehow.com/way_5657101_information-proper-use-gait-belt.html Cyndi B. > > Mike & I had our 1st adults pnly getaway this weekend and all was great > until our 25 y.o.poor called us yesterday afternoon because Tori > REFUSED to get out of the car after Mon took her to Mcs. Guest guest
Sara, This method only works if you have unlimited time. Unfortunately, my son does this when we are going out the door to an appointment (usually speech or another appointment, which we cannot be late for). Being pressed for time, always with so much in my schedule, I cannot stop to read a book. However, leaving the room sometimes works, but that is when he starts to break things. The other time he does this is when he is outside and it is time to come in. We cannot leave him outside because he takes off. He has this down to a science and is very noncompliant. Yes, I attribute this to overexpression of the genes and being plain out uncooperative and stubborn (because he gets mean, screams, throws things, and breaks things that belong to others). > > > ** > > > > > > Liz,My son does the stop drop flop and hurts our wrists on a daily basis > > (not to mention other body parts). Guest guest
I know why my son does this...it is because he wants his way.PLain and simple. And when he is not getting his way, he throws a SDF tantrum. It is Charlie Hart's way or the highway. He needs a daily aba therapist by his side for two solid weeks in the home. *I* physically am not able to devote 200% of my time to him (even 100% I can't, but he wants more), as I have other kids that need me as well. Fat chance getting a 12 hour day shift therapist paid for by insurance for two weeks. He just needs to be broken (from the habit)and he needs someone there all of the waking hours (from just before waking time, when it starts) one-on-one to stop this, as it has really become a habit for him. > > > ** > > > > > > Liz,My son does the stop drop flop and hurts our wrists on a daily basis > > (not to mention other body parts). Guest guest
A gait belt sounds like a good idea, but at some point you just get fed up and just have to make them get up so you can keep the schedule going. I feel for you Liz because my daughter was in crutches for 6 weeks with a torn ligament because while he was on a SDF on the floor (and we were walking away), he grabbed my daughter's ankle and pulled her to the ground. He disabled someone twice his age in a few seconds for two months. > > > > > > > ** > > > > > > > > > > > > Liz,My son does the stop drop flop and hurts our wrists on a daily > > basis > > > > (not to mention other body parts). Guest guest
Interesting on the fire department, by my son would enjoy the fire dept coming out and would soon learn that every time he does this, he gets more attention. He would get up for the fire dept and shake their hand. (I have a visual!) I would look like a fool. > > > > Mike & I had our 1st adults pnly getaway this weekend and all was great > > until our 25 y.o.poor called us yesterday afternoon because Tori > > REFUSED to get out of the car after Mon took her to Mcs.
