Wesley wilts in the heat ... my husband wanted to move to Florida to live near

his two sisters and I cannot do it for several reasons..one of them being how

the heat affects Wesley...

Our Tony does this. It drives me nuts because he is smart enough to know

better. But he will go sit in the car on a hot day and not roll (yes my car

is old ) down the windows. I don't think of it as escaping because Tony

is allowed to wander around our yard and we try to make sure where he is but

he is fairly safe about it. Except for when he gets in the hot car and does

not roll down the window. By the time I figure out where he is he is often

sweating away. He gets a time out for this and I explain and explain how

this is dangerous but it doesn't seem to matter.

Tony is also seriously affected by the heat. It takes a lot for Isaac to

sweat and he gets more sleepy just like the rest of us but Tony totally

loses it in the heat. He has no judgment and is amazingly cranky - way more

so than the rest of us in the heat. Even when I take him to the pool on a

very hot day, he does not bounce back, not even for a little bit. Anyone

else so seriously affected by heat?

Thank goodness we live in Wisconsin!

Elie escaped Before LOCK DOWN (BLD) and was found several acres away on a

country road, doing his flopped and dying roach act. He was circled by our

country neighbors in pick up trucks. I found him because they kept honking

their horns. As soon as he saw me he got right up and walked home like

nothing happened.

Lately wes has been escaping out of the back door in spite of alarm and sits in

his car seat....he does not shut the door yet...but anyone...this conversation

here is so relevant to us..I guess I have to make sure I lock the car...I was

glad he went in the car and not running away but the heat issue is too scary..

Zeb did exactly the same. He does not do well in the heat. I used to keep the

car locked for years. Zeb took my car keys when he was 6 and locked the doors,

windows up and put the keys in the ignition. My dh was screaming at him like a

lunatic to open the door. He was frantic that he would start the car and put it

into gear. I was teaching his sister to drive that year. Little did I know that

Zeb was taking it all in while sitting in the backseat during those lessons. I

was able to tell him he couldn't drive without a license and he opened the car

door. It was too close for comfort. As years passed he was ok to leave the car

unlocked. Twice after that incident, years later, he sat in the hot car waiting

for me when we had plans to go out. I didn't know he was already in the car.

After that I keep the car locked all the time.

We put an slide latch at the very top of our slider door when Zeb was younger.

It did the trick.

It's relevant here, too.

runs outside and heads straight for the car. It's always locked, and

he's not able to get the doors open anyway. But this morning, while we waited

for the bus, he raced to the cars parked on the street and tried _their_ doors,

too. And from hearing people talk here, it dawned on me, this can be a problem,

a life-threatening problem.

Thinking about what to do. A social story??
