Guest guest
Hi Marie, My son, , 7 yrs. old is exactly the same! He hates hair cuts, hair-combing and having his nails clipped- all tortuous. We've tried cutting hair/clipping nails while was in a deep sleep, but he woke up immediately and was up for several hours. This has always been the case and we thought it would get better over time too. We take every 2 months to the local hair salon for children (Kidz Cuts)- , the wonderful woman who cuts his hair, is extremely patient, loving. The salon has video/CDplayers at each station, which does distract a little bit, at least for a few seconds at a time. She's quick and cuts the hair pretty well (to out great amazement), but it take both my husband and I to hold down and it is getting harder. It's like a workout and we are sweating bullets in no time. The owner had suggested that have his hair cut in stages over the course of a week, a few minutes at a time, and come back even in between appts., so that he gets used to the staff. We appreciate their willingness to be so flexible, but of course this is not realistic and the very thought of it is exhausting and blood pressure-raising! I wish I had suggestions for you, but hopefully other folks on the list-serv will and I look forward to learning how to handle this situation too. Date: Mon, 25 Jul 2011 01:59:05 +0000 Subject: Ideas for Hair cuts Hi everyone, What have you parents done regarding haircuts? My son Liam, who is 7 years old, has SEVERE problems with getting his hair cut. This has gone on for years now, we have tried so many things and it's not getting any better. Tonight was the worst and may be the last b/c my husband and I feel it's getting to the point that he will get hurt. He becomes like a rabid animal and we have to hold him down and he's getting too big and strong. We can't use scissors as that would be too dangerous so we use the clippers. I know it's sensory, he has issues with his head area, i.e. will not wear a hat, hates a hair brush being used. He acts like it's torture, that it hurts, and maybe it is and does. He calms down once it's over but I feel his little heart beating from the anxiety and takes a lot out of him and us. We do it here at our house, in front of the TV with a favorite movie or show, we have tried various tactics and rewards and NOTHING works. I was hoping that this would get a bit better as time goes along but it hasn't and he only keeps getting stronger. I would let him grow his hair out as I have no problem with that, the problem is as it gets longer he starts his " twirling hair " behavior that starts to interfere with any activity that needs his hand involved which is pretty much EVERYTHING! Can he be sedated for something like a haircut? thoughts, advice, ideas, wisdom would be greatly appreciated.......
