I just signed up Beth. Thanks. Seth is at object level with PECS and

it is going well. I have spent a lot of time in his class over the last 1

1/2 years and from my observations, I see where the system they use (TEACH

and PECS) works with about half of the kids. I don't know if the kids that

it doesn't work with would do well with ABA or some other program, but seems

to me they would try something else after a couple of years of getting no

where. Our district uses only TEACH/PECS. I don't know about anyone else,

but the more knowledge I gain about autism, the more confused I get! LOL I

started out knowing nothing and accepting the little bit I was told. Now I

know there are a zillion different programs and I have to decide what would

work the best, (for Seth) until something else comes along. Oh, and

Beth, MAN, YOU ARE COMPUTER SMART!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Dear Joan,

If you go to the Links section, I loaded the info there, but here it is also:

http://www.onelist.com/community/TASHUpdate

(I thought a notice would come to the group saying this was posted at the

Links. Sorry! I must have goofed up on that.)

Messages from

#1089-#1113 on the list were the ones I read in digest form today. These

cover what I was referring to.

This is the Inclusion list serve info:

http://www.ualberta.ca/htbin/lwgate/INCLUSION/

(Again, I also did post this on the Links tonight too.)

Sorry for any confusion!

I already went and vented.....

I'll have to read the debate about PECS later. But what I saw was pretty

darn intersting.

Hi Beth!

I love your posts! This is what I recently discovered also when

I joined the TASH list about a week ago! I saved several of those

posts as I thought them very interesting. You first brought it to my

attention and I am going to pursue this as an additional tool that

could be useful to Ted.

Gail/Cleveland, OH

<<Anyway, not that you all don't have a million things to do right now,

but I

have never seen this particular level of posts on the TASH list. I think

those of us who have major challenges around toileting, personal hygiene,

self-care, etc., as well as all of the language stuff should let these

people know what kind of real help we need. A lot of time and attention

is

paid to the aggressive behaviors, (my observation), but real help for our

kids to gain skills is sooooo sloooooow in coming. I posted info at the

Links about these two lists. FYI.

GREAT MB!!! Thanks. I joined. I'm really going to look into this vsm

(video self modeling) since Maddie is SUCH a visual learner. Question

though: Say I want to teach Maddie how to dress herself. Ok...break that

down to small steps. Pulling her pants up, say. How do you do the vsm if

she doesn't know HOW to do it? Get my drift? Hand over hand? But then,

she's not doing it. Thoughts?

Also, did anybody else who signed up for the ABA listserv get accepted yet.

I'm still on pending.

That's the thing. WHY oh why do they keep on keeping on when they are going

nowhere!!! The ABA is working wonderfully with Maddie now (it's is so so

exciting to have her look us in the eye AND to laugh or smile back at us),

but I'm going to print up all the info I can vsm and bring it to her

teacher/therapists. And start something at home. Maddie loves to watch

videos. Maybe this will take us somewhere!! But we'll sure never know if we

dont' try.

Donna,

I am soooo glad that Maddie is doing so well. The scary part of trying a new

program with our kids is that they could lose everything and take months or

years to get it back. How long do you wait and see if something works, or if

it works better than something else would? Seth is making progress, but I

wonder if he would make better progress with another method. Is there a

recommended trial time for all these programs? Maybe a year or two should be

devoted to just testing these programs with kids while they are young to see

what works best for each kid, then devote the rest of their education on

learning with that method? OR, does the way they learn keep changing? Very

confusing *I* think! LOL I want so much to do what is best for Seth, but I

don't know what *best* is! Oh, looking at another class for Seth tomorrow,

for next year. UGH!!!!!!! Getting tired of seeing all the places he DOESN'T

belong. LOL

How true Gail. Well, I think for us, the key thing to pay attention to is

to GET OUT quick, if a program is not working. I know with Maddie that if

we ever see major regression or fear, we need to move fast and get her out.

This was truly my biggest fear all along with the ABA and DTT. I decided

from the get go, that I would yank her out of MM if I saw she was not

dealing, or regressing. Instead, to my great surprise, the opposite

happened. Go figure. Floortime was an easy decision for me to make because

it is gentle teaching. ABA is not. Dr. Capone and the neuro doc down at KKI

had actually recommended ABA/DTT when Maddie was first dx'd and I said no

way. However, knowing Maddie as well as I do, she was definitely not ready

for it then. And even at MM, they didn't even attempt it til Maddie had

reached that comfort level with her new school.
