Guest guest
I can't think of any books specifically, but these seem like fairly basic behaviors for our kids. For example, our son Darwyn (age 6 DS ASD) will sometimes poop to make a statement. If he has a substitute at school he won't have a bowel movement until he comes home (and he's usually a morning guy). Or if I go away for 2 days, he'll poop when I get home (often in the bath or in his pull-up- which he rarely does anymore). Or even funnier, he has one babysitter and we joke that if he's ever constipated, we can call her to come over and the situation will resolve itself. As for the pushing/hitting, is it an issue of being overstimulated? Does it happen after or during a particular activity or time of day? When Darwyn is tired or overwhelmed he'll hit us and if he gets a reaction, he'll do it again. He always starts hitting us after a week of school vacation because he's mad that he's not in school. Also he will push kids out of the way sometimes, but not maliciously, just like they are being moved aside so he can get where he's going. Is there any possibility she played a pushing/tag game at preschool and can't differentiate when to push? I know some parents can't allow their kids to ever wrestle or watch wrestling because they can't understand when to stop. Just some ideas, and if you have more details about the when and where of hitting/pushing some others on the list might have some ideas too. Immediate distraction and ignoring works best for us. , Mom to (age 10 NT) and Darwyn ( age 6 DS ASD and a few heart surgeries), Canada Sent on the TELUS Mobility network with BlackBerry ocd resources? Guest guest
Hi , I don't think anyone has the ability to control bowels. Hitting and pushing can be an issue that needs to addressed with a behavior plan but I would not characterize what you described as ocd behaviors. OCD behaviors are compulsive and structured. They are behaviors that interfere with life as in lining up toys, the need to put the light on three times when entering a certain room etc. If you break that line and interrupt the structured behavior meltdowns occur. Just a few examples to clarify true ocd behaviors. I hope this helps. Charlyne Subject: Re: ocd resources? Guest guest
Hi , I just noticed you have a 1 year old child too. Many of us on the list have kids who struggle with the unpredictability of babies. I find that Darwyn is okay with older kids, but babies (especially crying babies) overwhelm him. Is there any chance that the hitting happens when her sister is or has been crying? For years Darwyn would get upset when other kids cried or when video characters cried or even during the refrain for Wheels on the Bus when the babies cried (we had to sing it over and over and he would laugh, but also be bothered by it). Then he started standing beside kids who cried waiting for them to stop (this is very sweet), but often he felt compelled to throw something after that (not so sweet). Sorry for the longwindedness, but I'm still thinking there are probably triggers for your daughter's hitting. Its not easy to figure those out sometimes, but If you can find a trigger event, that can make changing the behavior so much easier. , Mom to (age 10 NT) and Darwyn ( age 6 DS ASD and a few heart surgeries) , Canada Sent on the TELUS Mobility network with BlackBerry ocd resources? Guest guest
Thank you all so much! Josie has many negative behaviors in response to the 1 year old- thank you for discussing the discomfort with crying- I also see that in Josie. The stuff that made me and my very homeopathicly-minded doc think of OCD were some of the issues with toileting (things have to be a certain way there) and also with some of the random things that have to be repeated a certain way- nothing seems 100% OCD but then again, Josie isn't 100% on the spectrum, nor is she 100% Down syndrome compared to her peers with DS- To help her and us all better cope, I'm on the lookout for some good books on behavioral therapy and thought you might share some favs- I appreciate all your input and taking the time to reply (my time is short at the moment) and am grateful for this list! - B. > > Hi , > I just noticed you have a 1 year old child too.
