Guest guest
<<Will this second surgery prevent any future sinus problems? What does the doc recommend for prophylaxis after next week?>> Hi, Everyone........We were told upfront that it won't prevent recurrent surgeries, but the hope is that it will work and make him feel better. The guilt I feel about not going to an ENT doc a long time ago is really pulling at me. I guess Gareth was really bad, chronic infection wise..........but I didn't know that. He's just always perforated his ear, the PCP would put him on antibiotics and that was it. The main problem is his ability to fight bacterial infections.....which is what most sinus infections are. Who knows how long he's been hurting from it. As for prophylaxis....he didn't say. He would like to do the Allergy testing (with the needles) but realizes that is out of the question for Gareth. The blood allergy testing only shows him allergic to Ragweed, but the ENT says it's worse than that. He'll probably be put on an OTC med like Allegra or Zyrtec. Charlyne....tell Zed to enjoy himself!!!! Gareth went to his 10th and 11th grade Prom but was too sick from the Slero as a senior to go. He always enjoyed them and LOVES getting all dressed up!!! Take care, Everyone. Margaret
Guest guest
Margaret - The blood test does not show any food allergies? Are they checking? My understanding is that while allergists are split on the RAST test (needles) vs. the blood test, the RAST test most often shows environmental allergies and the blood test most often shows food allergies. And weren't you the one that sent out an article a while ago on the need for an allergy medication to help dry up ear infections? I took that article and applied it to the boys allergy related stuffy noses as well. We really live by Claritin (we do the Walgreens version). I don't like them to be on it all the time but if I have them take it when there allergies first start to bother them, it seems to head off sinus infections and ear infections. Best of luck to Gareth next Friday. I knew some teens once with major allergies that had surgery like Gareth's and the follow-up exam was quite painful and they thought it was very gross. They were big, tough hockey players. The ENT pulled long .. Oh never mind. I don't want to gross anyone out but these boys couldn't believe what came out of their noses. The surgery did seem to fix these boys for good. Lori Mom to Isaac 14 and Tony 12 _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of mfroof@... Guest guest
Only my opinion from my experiences: I was found to be allergic to many atmospheric things by RAST when I was about 30. Told to take OTC meds when needed - goodby and thank you. Then after years of battling asthma, rashes (really urticaria) , constant coughs, at age mid 50's I was suddenly VERY ILL from a med I had taken for years. Swollen face, throat , tongue. The allergist/ENt I went to after listening to my history and NO BLOOD tests or needles, and a period of weeks when I started to develop urticaria spontaneously, decided on the following treatment; I take doxepin (10 mg.) as a potentiator for zyrtec. I take it EVERY DAY symptoms or not. Since then, I have had 2 bronchial infections with long term coughs. IT has been about 14 years now. Now I also need to take a daily inhaler of steroids for the chronic allergic bronchitis. But no sinus infections, very few 'colds with nasal issues, no ear aches. All of these I had prior which it is now believed to have been due to allergies. > > > Margaret - > > The blood test does not show any food allergies? Are they checking?
