Guest guest
Hi all, Hope you had a great holiday season. We are having to update JJ's IEP in the next week. This was planned way back in June, so it is not a surprise. Need to know--when your kids started to use PECS or another communications device did the school cut down on the speech. JJ is getting speech 5 days a week. I think they are wanting to cut this down to 1 or 2 times or none because PECS is bing taught in the classroom. Any comments would be appreciated. & Garry, parents of (10 ds), (9 ds/g-tube), JJ (7 ds/autism/celiac), (6 ds/ADHD/Celiac), and Esther (3 ds). All adopted. Guest guest
nancy, ashton's teacher uses pecs in her class with all the kids and all routines. when ashton goes to reg ed the teacher has a visual schedule that ashton follows, with her communication book as a backup if they can't understand her speech. her iep states she gets 2.5 hours of speech a week. the pecs is not part of that. i would never let them decrease a child's speech. communication is the key to the world. i dont care if its eye gazing, hand over hand pointing, pecs, verbal ly speaking, sign language, body gestures, or even grunts. our children need that so much.. i don't know if this is any help, but its what we have for her....take care and good luck.....leah who is home with pneumonia, ashton has bom, and cameron strep.... > >Reply-To: egroups >To: " onelist " <egroups> >Subject: Speech/PECS >Date: Thu, 04 Jan 2001 08:45:41 -0800 > >Hi all, > >Hope you had a great holiday season. Guest guest
Joan, Our experience with PECS has not been a particularly postitive one. While the system/strategy is basically a sound one, unfortunately, by the time the training " trickles " down to the aides in our " self-contained " classroom, it has lost some in the transition. Our classroom and 1:1 aides have really good hearts; but not a lot of formal training. It tends to translate into them putting their own " slant " on the techinque. While we live in a very rural, small town now, I ran into the same problem in the bigger suburban area where we used to live. Terry Mom to , 13 yrs. Guest guest
Joan, Seth gets his PECS through trained teachers and therapists. They do use the formal strategy. His aide had some training in it over the last couple of years, but this is the first time she has seen it used totally, all day and at different levels I think. It did take a while to get everything in place for Seth, being at an object level, but he is taking off with it now and they are now putting the picture with the object and he is pointing to the picture. :-) I love watching the kids with their books of pictures. They have come so far in the last 1 1/2 years that I have been observing. Kids that didn't have any oral usage, now talk in sentences. It is amazing! I know Seth's teacher goes to workshops for PECS and if I'm not mistaken, seems that the main place is centered in the South where she goes? I'm eager to hear what the others think of it too! Guest guest
I've got a question for you all. I read lots of you talking about kids using PECS in their classrooms...but that is a specific strategy and requires specific training. Are you all getting the Picture Exchange Communication System from folks trained by the Pyramid Education Consultant folks (and their certified trainers) or do you mean they are using photo/symbols/picture cards for hte kids to make requests with in general? PECS, the formal strategy, appears to be a decent one. I'm not picking on anyone...I'm actually sort of snooping as I get ready to go into negotiations in the next few months. j
Guest guest
joan, ashtons teacher and speech path have both been to the pecs training, and i attended in june by the pyramdid education consultants training. ashton has gone through all the steps and now manipulates her own choices most of the time, but since her speech is increasing, her use of the symbols is decreasing as it should. but i still keep my house labeled as she is beginning to read and we utilize the pictures as reinforcers to reading. we also use the pictures for shopping lists ect so she has visual prompts..heck even my normal five year old, if there is such a thing enjoys the pictures and it helps him too...... take care, leah ps what are you negotiating for????? > >Reply-To: egroups >To: egroups >Subject: Re: Speech/PECS >Date: Fri, 05 Jan 2001 13:25:43 -0800 > >I've got a question for you all. > >I read lots of you talking about kids using PECS in their classrooms...but >that is a specific strategy and requires specific training. I brought all the info for PECS training for our team, affordable even, told them to contact me if money was an issue, and *I* was the only one there. That didn't help much. I'm just trying for an " appropriate " education. Andy's in a 5th grade class right now which means, in theory, that he is to move on to MIddle school. While we've had some gains in social/communication with an inclusive placment, the skills stuff is pretty awful. This, I've learned, isn't unusual in inclusive placements where training isn't the best. I want someone trained in strategies that work for Andy , who is " good " at it at least on the team. I want an EA who has been trained in how to adapt stuff, not someone who was sleeping under one of the bridges the week before they were hired to be an EA--and no training. Heck. *I* Don't care if he knows that this is " purple, " but I do care that he knows RED means stop in a stoplight or caution in other areas. ::sigh::: I " m tired of it all. j
Guest guest
joan, i wish i had answers for you but i dont!! every day is a battle for us too!ashton is not in a total inclusive setting, she does 50/50 split.. i agree with you on the purple....hehe i don't care is she says red correctly but she too knows red means stop... and green go... i have this really bright idea for her to strengthen her money skills. i made a menu for dinner....basically a piece of laminated posterboard with velcro strips....i laminated real money with the value above it, not to exceed a quarter....at dinner time i will velcro the food we are having with a drink on the menu with the amount it cost next to it...ie picture of chicken = 25cents, picture of glass of milk = 5 cents, well when she wants more, she has to use signs, symbols and or words to ask for the item and identify the cost and give the correct amount. " i want more chicken, and gives me a quarter " tonight was our first night and she did fairly well....i dont expect perfection but she is liking this and so is cameron....hehe later on we will have dollars tomake change....just thought i would share this idea with everyone.... joan, i wish you strength and many patience, the middle schools hear suck...they dont even have basic social skills with regular kids....i keep telling my husband i am moving to a shelterin vermont when she hits middle school....lololol hang in there and please share any bright ideas you have....... > >Reply-To: egroups >To: egroups >Subject: Re: Speech/PECS >Date: Fri, 05 Jan 2001 15:41:09 -0800 > >At 05:12 PM 1/5/01 -0500, you wrote: > >ps what are you negotiating for????? > >Leah, that sounds great. Guest guest
Joan, They are using PECS for JJ now, but have not started Timmy yet. And everyone is thrilled that it is working for him. There is a big push for this system in our SH classes specially with the autistic kids. Teachers and aides are taking the classes and using the 'official' materials. & Garry, parents of (10 ds), (9 ds/g-tube), JJ (7 ds/autism/celiac), (6 ds/ADHD/Celiac), and Esther (3 ds). All adopted.
