This is always a fear of I think all of us. What people on the outside dont

know and THINK they know is crazy. Hopefully, they will come in, do their

checks, and see that you are doing your best to take care of Ashton and that she

is happy, healthy (as can be in her situation) and loved. Other children should

be so lucky. Keep us posted and we will keep you in our prayers.

I had a family member report my family to the Children's Aid Society because my

son (with MDS) exposed himself. My own family. Nice. Sorry, just venting 2

years after the fact. And they are still not speaking to us.

Leah,

Didn't you go through something like this in the past? Sara said it so

wonderfully. You and Ashton in my thoughts and prayers; I've marked the

18th on the computer calendar to remind me to pray for you that day.

Along the line of what Sara said reminded me of something. I have been on

our local Human Rights Authority over the past 20 years. During that time

we have had to investigate complaints against some of the best hospitals or

agencies. During that time I can think of three of the nurse administrators

of the hospitals that we have asked to become the mental health

representative on the Authority. They are great people and became good

friends.

It is a very scary and overwhelming thing to have to wait for the visit.

Keep reminding yourself and visualize that day how it will all turn out the

way you want it to be. As Jaylene mentioned have someone be with you that

day for support.

In the eyes of APS they are only following such PROCESS a word which we have

encounter within as told when my friends & I have some of our meetings with some

of the families affected undergoing the guardianship abuse.

Here you are fortunate you have a date & time.

Most of the time this could be an immediate action of removal or unannounced

visit which we have heard here in Texas.

Fingers cross for you that you will prove them wrong when they come out to

inspect. It is like walking on egg shells when raising our our individuals w/any

disAbilites or even our elders too.

Ok, let's scope out a checklist that is usually what most from the state agency,

APS, etc. look out for.

You've mentioned hygiene here, wonder why in 's part why were you

reported?

Over on your fridge accessible to read have emergency numbers:

Example in my son's case he is under Home and Community Based Services

The purpose of this posting is to report the

Medicaid Provider Agreement for this provision of

HCS program services by:

Fire extinguisher accessible (with a sign of Extinguisher, Exist signs at each

door, I also have some small hand signs with EXIST to assist for our fire

drills. Fire/Smoke alarm updated & working. Where-ever Ashly is at make sure

there are quick open access in case of a fire emergency. Normally if asked on

time of fire drill, mentioned usually during PM, like when asleep, which room,

which exist, designated gathering locale, Time needed from alarm until reaching

designated locale is under 3 seconds/Minutes. These are some example of goals

you you implement for .

I work on the fire drills like 1 to 3 times quarterly within the year. Also have

a social story to review in case of an emergency.

If possible over at the kitchen area, have 's meds all in one container

like inside hidden in a cupboard where it's quick access for you where it's just

not all over the counter or elsewhere due to endangerment should she get it and

overdose. Then inside the door tape a Medication Administration Record:

(Make sure you have a notebook or folder with these medications or even

supplements written on a script or recommendation form when prescribed or

discontinued documented, keep all copies w/doc's signature). So whenever you get

a script before getting it filled, make a copy for your records. Would be great

if you have some type of a professional consultation form which any professional

fills out like reason for visit, date of last visit, recommendation of last

visit, Today's findings, recommendations/Medications changes/orders, return

visit, & professional signature. All of this is just for your protection and

's whenever questioned.

Across from the Medication, make some small squares with number 1-31, so each

day you follow the time & initial it every time Ashely is given her meds or

supplements by mouth or applied to skin, etc.

Bottom include a box for additional instructions, etc.

Allergies, etc.

In her bedroom, once again glance all safety drill is in order. Have some visual

pics or breakdown skills on her dressing skills,etc. visual pics where to find

her clothing items, etc. Just shows on goals which you implement daily which

Ashely is being worked on which reflects back to her hygiene goals being worked

on. A visual schedule, a choice board, etc. This helps out due to being part of

teaching goal/objective/outcome where Ashely will improve her hygiene skills.

Just sharing as an example.

Clean restroom, if you do not have any breakdown visual breakdown skills with

words, place some so when questioned these are the goals on her personal hygiene

we work with. Example toothbrushing, hand wash, if possible shower or bath,

place a grab bar is possible, the girl stuff.

All of this is just for her safety & goals working on hygiene, etc.

I may be missing something, normally this is what is being monitored than

whatever else they are looking for. Maybe others can also share other things

here if I missed something.

Do not say anything else, unless they question you and of course may share this

is what you always work on such goals to prepare where needed.

Oh yes, make sure to also include communication goals as well somehow. Like for

we have pics on the fridge, choice boards, his communication goals, etc.

Wish you well Leah, prayers that your future visit will go well. Just make sure

to follow this sample more or less of what I have shared for times like this you

have proven that Ashely is in good hands per whatever 24 hours of daily

activities, etc. to identify her routine & unique activities specific to what is

being implemented.

p---- off? If the allegations are unfounded then you know the truth always

prevails. Hold your chin up. I am reminded about a situation that occurred last

year during Zeb's IEP meeting. Zeb's sped teacher/ case manager decided that Zeb

needed a goal for hygiene because sometimes his hair wasn't combed and she felt

his teeth needed brushing. My blood pressure shot through the roof. Zeb takes a

shower every night, puts on clean clothes every morning and does brush his

teeth. He goes to school looking better than 75% of the teens that I watch

walking into school. Does the school staff comment on typical student's  hair?

Do they check to see if their teeth are brushed to staff satisfaction? Most of

these kids look like they just rolled out of bed and they most likely did. They

are wearing shorts with no coat in the middle of winter. Why is my son subjected

to a different

standard? I got my point across that day but the subject should not have been

an issue to begin with. The finger pointing infuriates me.

The double standard is infuriating. Isaac got another detention. This time

he came in from lunch recess hot and tired and his teacher said, " what are

you doing? " and he said, " what do you care? " and he got a detention. A

typical student would not have - they would have been ignored.

We are going on vacation and happily leaving the school and Wisconsin

politics behind. We might never come back. :-)

I fight the double standard constantly. How do we teach our kids about fairness

and respect when they get none. I could go on an on about this. Thankfully I am

counting down days to graduation. Zeb has an interview at Mason

University in Virginia on May 9. They have the best college program in the

country for kids with ID. Pray he gets accepted!!! I need to get him out of this

area. I rushed for time, taking MIL to PT. Talk again.

Ignoring unwanted behavior is an acceptable response - but some teachers

need to LEARN that they don't have to have the last word!

This teacher insists on the last word. It is why we are going to Mediation

the week we get back from vacation. The correct response is in his IEP

along with other strategies that this teacher has refused to follow - until

we filed a complain with the state. Now they are using most of the stuff in

his IEP. It is just a bad year but so unfair!

I keep reminding myself that we are still in the infancy of inclusion. Tony

hasn't been to school for 4 days - it started out with the flu but then his

personality started to shine again and we didn't have the heart to send him

right before vacation. We like his personality when it isn't wiped out by

school and what must be all of his sensory issues related to being in

school!

All of the parents at Special Olympics last night were in agreement that

legislatures should have to live at least one week with a kid with an

intellectual disability BEFORE making any more cuts.

Leah,

Until people walk our shoes (single parent or otherwise) they have absolutely NO

CLUE! The constant state of " overwhelmedness " (how's that for a new word?) that

we live with makes us easy targets, especially since we have no choice but to

rely on others for respite etc...

It's so hard to feel like the amazing parents we are because people are

constantly criticizing us.

They could NEVER do what we do!!!

Times like these is when you need to believe in your heart of hearts that you

are doing the best you can and employ what I call " Drama 606 " ...don't let them

see how they've upset you. It's amazing how these people who are supposed to be

HELPING you turn out to be those who HURT you-and the ironic part is they

usually are NOT doing THEIR jobs effectively and then you are held are

accountable for that?!?! Makes no sense!

Breathe. Now is the time to look into Ashton's eyes and remember what is most

important-how much you truly love her.

Remember " Drama 606 " (5 steps above the beginning level Drama 101 Class at your

local university)...have a good cleansing cry for a couple days before the

" visit " - get the pain and frustration out of your system first and it will be

OK!!! You can do this!!!

Sorry Leah that your having to deal with this. My first thought was who did you

p---- off? If the allegations are unfounded then you know the truth always

prevails. Hold your chin up. I am reminded about a situation that occurred last

year during Zeb's IEP meeting. Zeb's sped teacher/ case manager decided that Zeb

needed a goal for hygiene because sometimes his hair wasn't combed and she felt

his teeth needed brushing. My blood pressure shot through the roof. Zeb takes a

shower every night, puts on clean clothes every morning and does brush his

teeth. He goes to school looking better than 75% of the teens that I watch

walking into school. Does the school staff comment on typical student's hair?

Do they check to see if their teeth are brushed to staff satisfaction? Most of

these kids look like they just rolled out of bed and they most likely did. They

are wearing shorts with no coat in the middle of winter. Why is my son subjected

to a different

standard? I got my point across that day but the subject should not have been an

issue to begin with. The finger pointing infuriates me.

Lorie,

The IEP drives services and that is exactly what will be at the heart of the

mediation process. Bring alson every piece of documentation that you have and

think about what you want. The mediator will be looking for your remedy and

that's what you will be bargaining for. The district will give you a low ball

offer and it goes back and forth. It's like playing a bad game of poker. I hope

you get everything that Isaac deserves and then some.

I think the structure of school is better for my kids too - when school

works. We have nothing in our area but public school with inclusion. So

let's say that Tony gets bored in social studies, after 30 minutes they will

take him to a room and an SEA will sit with him. He has a list of activities

he is supposed to do there - like a 60 piece puzzle which he loves - but

usually the SEA makes him run around the school with him doing other things.

This makes Tony tired and he doesn't actually get the sensory break he

needs.

I think it is wonderful that and are thriving in an environment

that works for them. We have so much more work to do and creating

appropriate educational experiences for our children!

there is missed medication?

I feel for you because EVEN if cleared, this will ALWYA show up on the DFCS

computer and the next call may be worse for you because they look at previous

histories whetehr or not abuse was substantiated.

A Girl Scout leader did that to me when my daughter wanted to spend more time

with friends after a sleepover and she told the social worker that my daughter

*was afraid* to leave (B.S.). She was being snotty because I had reported her

behavior with the girls and rude comments to me to the district. I *knew* it was

her because my girls are homeschooled and had not been anywhere else to *not

want to go home*. I called and reported that incident as well and withdrew y

girls from that troop. (And I was cleared of any abuse, but it stays on the

computer file, nonetheless. I had one word for that---> BIT**

People can make your life a livng hell with gov't entities who have immunity. It

sucks.

You're so right, Lori. My goal is to transition my kids back to PS for high

school, but first we need some kind of program...

In the meantime, I just might homeschool my DD4 for kindergarten. She's just

not ready for an all-day program, especially in a class of 24 with 1 teacher, no

aide. How's that gonna work, really?

please pray for us. someone has turned me into adult protective services for

ashton having poor hygiene and not getting her medications. they have seen her

at school, contacted her two care providers had her pediatrician fill out a five

page report and now are coming to my house. I about had a heart attack. I am ocd

about her meds and hygiene and I am a freaking social worker. iggggggg a week of

hell to wait for that visit ..she is coming on the 18th at 1100... do people

actually realize what added stress they bring to our families......
