<<The language he does have is functional and repetetive and he wants

everything

that comes out of his mouth to be repeated back to him by everyone in the

room

and he won't stop until he gets that feedback loop.......... if he becomes

silent and passive, did I do it for him or for me? Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe

I'm hurting the situation by not having him on meds.I have a young woman

coming to the house 3 X's a week who is bi-polar and she doesn't remember our

conversations from one time to the next and that's what scares me about

psyche meds. Every day of his life has been a guessing game on my part, but I

have devoted my life to it. I thought I'd be a lot smarter by

now :)

Hi, Everyone.....Oh, how I wish I knew your name!!! Your life sounds just

like mine....repetitive but functional speech and verbal loops!!! Gareth,

too, insists that everything be repeated back to him so that he knows WE

understand what he said. He can respond to a simple yes or no question so I

can ask him what went on in his day......if I word the question

correctly!!! I understand your concerns for safety and people taking advantage

of

the situation. Gareth was suppose to go out today with a HAB worker and

blatantly refused.......so Mom is at home all day....again. Gareth was put on

meds for behavioral issues and OCD....he is NOT a zombie, though. If a med

made him worse or nonfunctional, then I took him off of if. His verbal

loops are easily redirected (Gareth, you know the answer to that.) on meds

and the cups, silverware, plates, etc., on the table will stay where someone

puts them........he doesn't reach across the table throughout the whole

meal putting everyone's cups, etc., where HE feels they HAVE TO BE!!! Our

motto here has always been to *start low and go slow* with meds. Many of us

have found out that our kids don't need the *recommended dosage* that many

psych doc insist on. Where do you live and what does your son do these

days. Gareth does go to a sheltered workshop W-Fri and seems to enjoy

it.....he LOVES that paycheck!!!

Take care, Everyone.

Margaret

Mom to Gareth, 22 y/o, DS/ASD/OCD
