We love Capone take questions, notes, meds list ,etc. He is very knowledgable.

When I first heard him speak I cried because I knew he was talking about my son.

I was relieved someone finally understood. Good luck

Well, he didn't tell us anything we didn't already know, but it was great to

finally talk to a doctor that understood Kayla. And it was reassuring to go

to THE MAN to confirm Kayla's autism diagnosis (the local developmental

pediatrician we saw just looked at her for 5 minutes and asked about 5

questions and said " yep, she has autism " - I kind of wanted a more thorough

evaluation than that!).

Capone and the doctors there. Has anyone been and what should I expect.

Thanks,

I have not met him in a " clinical " setting, but we saw him at conference...and

he saw Angie. I have been studying his research for years before we met him and

it was all of those papers we printed and took to assessments that people

finally believed our daughter has Down syndrome and Autism. Even though our

meeting was brief, he was so kind. We did actually have an appt and were going

to pay out of pocket and fly from CA to see him, but we have not done it yet.

Update us after the appt! Good luck!

HI Vicki -

You have probably already been there! how did it go?

We went 13 years ago with Andy, which led to the articles in " Disability

Solutions. " The clinic has gone through a lot of changes since we were there, so

I'm not a lot of help.

I can tell you that some folks have had trouble with the initial intake piece -

the info gathering with the nurse. They probably have kids like Andy. Any info

you can provide to the team ahead of time that will make the visit good for your

child is always a help. That is, within reason. Maybe ask for some photos to do

social story prep with yoru daughter?

is a kind man. He may use language that is a little intricate. Do not be

worried about asking for an explanation. He knows he's surrounded by people who

use words the rest of us don't hear too often, but he forgets, human being that

he is. Also, don't hesitate to ask for any information about things that you

need. OR to take time to make any therapeutic decisions.

The more data you can bring in the better the visit. In fact, if you can send it

ahead, that helps too. It helps them to see what you're dealing with. I'd write

down what your questions are and the target issues you have when sending it in.

Although all this is true for any visit to a specialist, I am presuming this is

also for an " autism eval " ? keeping some information on behaviors and such before

hand not only helps Dr. Capone, but it helps you later as well. You will be able

to see what has changed for the better (or not) with the different

interventions. Writing it down means you can evaluate later rather than in the

moment. And, if you're anything like me, you don't think about evaluating things

unless there are problems, so it's a good thing to take a break before thinking

it through.

Last, ask him how you can get in touch with him if you have questions or

concerns. He'll tell you what he prefers.

I hope it went well, or that it goes well!

Take care,

Joan (Guthrie Medlen)

Mom of Andy, 22, who has autism, Ds, celiac disease, and one word.

You know, all those years ago, that visit was the best thing I did for ME and

for Andy over the years.

Why?

the validation that I was not losing my mind, the validation that Andy can, of

course, learn, and the validation (at that time) that he could make a choice! We

were about to go to due process over something as stupid as whether or not this

kid could make a choice. Sheesh.
