Guest guest
Hi all, My son Asher has suddenly started to vocalize non stop with yelling in-between. It is like a loud growl with Ahhhs and " eeeyuh " . He is very happy and otherwise acting like himself. He is reportedly doing this at school too. My hubby thinks this is a good thing and it may be a sign that some speech may occur in the near future....I'm not so sure this is the case or that it is a good thing. I'm sure some of your kiddos do this or have in the past... Any thoughts? He has no words only a few sounds that mean things that only we would understand. He uses some PECs and has a couple signs that he does using our hands for assistance. He can use the IPAD Proloqo 2 Go program for choice making and for yes/no questions occasionally. He is 5 and a half DS/ASD Amy in CT mommy to Asher and
Guest guest
Hi Amy, Darwyn is at the same stage. We encourage vocalization when he uses PECs. So he doesn't just point he has to make an effort to say the word, so for sandwich he makes an " s " sound and its a huge effort for him and he tries to just point, but his interventionist is both fun and tough and she waits him out and pretends she doesn't understand and finally he makes a sound - usually a vowel sound that matches the word. " Eeeee " means about 10 different words in our house (luckily he has signs too so we can decipher which eeeee word it is if there's not a PEC). In his head he is either saying the word correctly or he really only hears parts of each word and thinks its a whole word. I swear he ignores the first consonant of many words. Once I was talking about a poem and Darwyn started signing " home " . I think the vocalizing is definitely a precursor to speech we'll eventually understand. For example he makes the same garbled vocalizations when he says " bye bye " and waves good bye. This sounds nothing like good bye to us, but is clearly different from his " eeeee " words. And sometimes when he comes home from school he has lots to say and babbles away before he can settle down for his nap. , Mom to (age 10 NT) and Darwyn ( age 6 DS ASD and a few heart surgeries), Canada Sent on the TELUS Mobility network with BlackBerry Vocalizations Hi all, My son Asher has suddenly started to vocalize non stop with yelling in-between. Guest guest
Amy, Zeb is 18 and sings or groans' loudly at the top of his lungs to his DVDs and CDs, high school musical etc. After listening to them maybe 50x he still only remembers and sings a word or two. He's tone deaf and believe me it's terrible. He thinks he great and tells me he is practicing. Crossing fingers that he gets accepted into a college program. Guest guest
This sounds like verbal stimming. My kids have auditory processing problems and will hum as a way to control noise input. I know how annoying it is to have two different kids humming different songs (off-key). Motrin isn't enough!! Sent from my iPhone > Hi again > It is literally non stop and often LOUD. Guest guest
nathan is 19 and is very similar, he loves to sing with his musical dvd's and cds. and he is hard of hearing so often his tv is VERY loud! and his singing isnt the greatest, but he is happy singing so other than reminding him to keep his volume at " 20 " we let him go at it. shawna    http://sewshawna.blogspot.com ________________________________ To: Sent: Fri, January 28, 2011 10:48:34 PM Subject: Re: Re: Vocalizations  Amy, Zeb is 18 and sings or groans' loudly at the top of his lungs to his DVDs and CDs, high school musical etc. After listening to them maybe 50x he still only remembers and sings a word or two. Guest guest
Hi Amy, when does Asher do this? If it is when he is engaged with an activity (tv/music/toys) I would not think it is a stim. If he is doing it with nothing else going on, he might be " experimenting " with his new found vocalizations (similar to how a baby babbles) or he could be stimming. You might be able to figure out which it is by observing & just mentally noting when & how often. For what its worth, DJ started doing the same but MUCH later than your son. I swear he sounds like a whale or dolphin pod when he starts " singing " to his music... Depending on my mood, it either cracks me up or drives me batty. LOL. But since he NEVER tried to sing until around middle school age, overall I am gladdened & try to tolerate it. I did get him headphones so that cut down on some sounds eching around the homestead. Oh, I almost forgot. DJ will make various & weird sounds on occassion which is clearly a stim. In his case it might be on a car trip or on the bus & obviously it is an attempt to stay awake. Using headphones & cd player has helped change this behavior more than anything else I tried. Hope this has helped. Good luck.
