Guest guest
Darwyn had a similar reaction to amoxicillin, but I don't remember any peeling skin. Sent on the TELUS Mobility network with BlackBerry skin peeling question Hi All, I am talking to Pete's dr. tomorrow, but just thought I'd post here while I am waiting. Pete had a reaction to amoxicillan after taking it for four days- he developed a rash on the soles of his feet, bright red, and a more hives-like reaction on the palms of his hands. The dr. had us stop the amoxicillan right away, and he hasn't been on anything else for this bronchitis. A few days ago, (this is one week after discontinuing the meds) the skin on the soles of his feet started coming off in huge pieces- like a lizard shedding his skin. The skin underneath is intact, but looks fragile to me. Last winter he had very tough, dry, cracked skin, and we treated it with this " urea " cream that softened it so the skin could slough off. But that took a month. This thing happened overnight. Pete is not complaining of pain, but I can't help but wonder if his skin had a sever reaction from the rash and this is how it's responding. Has me concerned, of course, because I don't want his this tender skin to be compromised. I don't know how long it will take to toughen up. Anyone know about this or had this with their child? (Pete is 20.) I just put a thick, impervious skin balm over the soles of his feet after he soaks them every day.) Thanks! Guest guest
Oh, MB! I can't help you on that one. My oldest had scarlet fever which caused the affected areas to peel like that. I would suggest putting perhaps some olive oil on his feet and socks at night. That would help keep them moist. Keep us posted if you would. Guest guest
My son had a rash, fever and red in the white in the eyes,at first the doc told us it was scarlet fever.well it all lasted about 10 days then we took him to a faraway doc team and they did so many tests, then they told us that he had Kawasaki syndrome.his skin then started to peel on his feet and hands so bad,he had brand new skin that made it to sensitive to walk untill it would heal. > > > > > > > > Hi All, > > > > > > > > I am talking to Pete's dr. tomorrow, but just thought I'd post > > here while I am waiting. Guest guest
Hi All, Well, the doctor ruled out a direct connection of Pete's peeling feet to the antibiotic. He said there would be other symptoms, such as a rash on his trunk, that he doesn't have and never did have. At this point he is attributing it to Pete's winter skin issues that he has had in the past- we need to be rigorous about making sure his shoes and socks are dry (it's possible that Pete being outside in boots every day hasn't helped) but we have been keeping him in cotton socks overnight. He said to continue using the barrier ointment we have been using (generic for aquaphor, or something like that) and just make sure he's not getting any cuts or open sores. He said the new skin should toughen up in a few days. We will see the dermatologist again if things don't improve right along. Dr. suggested leather shoes (well, he does have " sueded " sneakers, don't know if that counts, LOL!) and to trade off shoes every other day so they get aired out in between. The thing is, it is so hard to find shoes for Pete that fit him properly, and that he won't try and pull off and throw- STILL, after all these years. Well, I'll keep trying. Thanks everyone who replied. Dr. thinks that this comes under the umbrella of skin conditions that people with DS tend to get. (Pete has alopecia, but that is no longer considered in the same category as the other skin problems.) He also has had vitiligo, which is a loss of pigmentation in the skin, and he has some toenails starting to have fungal problems. So I guess I'll just have to continue to keep a close eye on all these things. Weird kid! Weird, wonderful kid. Never a dull moment.
