Guest guest
How did you cope? It just breaks my heart when our kids are treated poorly. Not only did Isaac hear some other kid say it but they changed his schedule on Monday without telling us they were going to do that. This can't happen. Isaac has to be foreshadowed and he has to practice new things. He knew he was taking a chance I'm sure but this is his way of getting even with teachers who change his schedule. He doesn't get that the consequence falls on him. Last Wednesday he had earned 23 Tiger tickets for good behavior. This is many days of good behavior - then he was caught running in the hall and they took all 23 Tiger tickets away. He wrote a note this morning that he forgot to take to school basically pleading to have his Tiger tickets back. His IEP states that he earns Tiger tickets for good behavior. We never agreed and no one ever said they would take them away for bad behavior. He was supposed to have other consequences. You know they would never grab 23 Tiger tickets away from a NT kid. I don't like it when Isaac says inappropriate things either - and he rarely does in our house. I just wish that when he does say something inappropriate they would follow the IEP so he would know what to expect. Thanks for sharing. Sent: Wednesday, January 26, 2011 3:05 PM To: Subject: Lori Hi, Everyone....Lori....my first question to the school would have been *who did he hear it from?* Do the kids prompt him to say things knowing darn good and well that he'll get in trouble? Gareth was suspended right and left for 3 yrs, usually 2 weeks at a time. There was no 10 day/year limit back then when he was in 1-3rd grade. Gareth got suspended for 2 weeks once, in first grade, for taking a drink of water at the fountain, turning around and spitting it on the kid behind him. I asked the school where he saw that....we didn't have a fountain in our house and we didn't teach him how to do it. NT kids are sneaky...our kids don't have that ability. NT kids know when to do something and can get away with it....out kids don't. It still surprises me that they will still suspend a spec ed kid for something that NT kids get away with daily. Gareth's whole *problem* was that Mom refused to put him in a Life Skills classroom and the school did all they could to get him in there. Take care, Everyone. Guest guest
Elie used the foulest language at any time - even while sitting in the tub while he wasa still in his 'specuial school " . ANd he was consequenced for it every time. Not that he cared. or understood. Moved to GA where he attended regular school, but still road a special bus. Language decreased in intensity but ws still there. Now he lives with a colleg aged man who has young adults in and out of the house all the time - and some of them use unsavory language. Elie has not used a foul word in my hearing for 2 years. My take? Somewone was whispering foul words, encouraging the use of it. I am sure that someone told Isaac to say that and that kids would like it. When ELie was being consequenced (with threat of suspension oif it continued) over hitting in the halls, I went to school and stood in the hall during class change - and documented all incidents of NT kids 'hitting', 'touching', pushing in the hall. I never heard anything aobut that behavior again. > > > How did you cope? Guest guest
Sara - I remembered that you said that one time in a post and I have tried to follow in your footsteps. When the school called they were so disturbed by his behavior that I was supposed to meet Isaac and the principal at the front door. I got to school and they spent twenty minutes trying to find Isaac to pull him out of class. When they finally handed him off I said, " in that group of kids one kid just called another kid and asshole and the other kid responded with faggot. " The teacher rushed off to pretend that she was going to put a stop to that right now - but of course those kids did not get suspended for the day. It was a whole group of kids so I don't know who said what but it hasn't worked for me as it did for you. Nonetheless, I applaud your efforts. _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Sara Cohen Sent: Wednesday, January 26, 2011 8:30 PM To: Subject: Re: Lori back to Margaret Elie used the foulest language at any time - even while sitting in the tub while he wasa still in his 'specuial school " . Guest guest
I'm so sorry, Lori. It's not fair! A friend of mine has a 4-year-old NT son who actually took " it " out and put " it " on the table in his classroom because " it went magic! " ...was sent by the sub to the headmaster's office...the headmaster was out so the poor kid sat and waited for two hours, until the end of the school day. He's 4, my goodness.
