Guest guest
Hi , My son, , will be 8 yrs. old on August 25th and he has the GoTalk 20 for just the past year. He is also non-verbal and approximates just a handful of signs. As you probably know, the full picture capacity is 105, of which requests approx. 20 pictures total at this time with verbal and physical prompts. His speech therapist will adapt the boardmaker program according to our needs at home, so it is basically a combo of favoirte food items, toys, songs and community places/hobbies at this time, and the top " default " row includes bathroom, help, more, all finished and " I want " . For the first 2 months, the only item would press would be pudding, his favorite food in the whole world, lol, but the fact that he was able to press the pudding icon and be rewarded with the actual item, was something that he picked up relatively quickly. Does Angie have a favorite food/ video or drink? Our speech therapist was also able to find the icons for 's favorite TV show (Little Einsteins) and this was actually the 2nd icon that he picked up on the GoTalk. BTW, the GOTalk is transported between home and school daily, which has been an important piece for consistency for . I think as long as Angie has a strong pointer finger that she is able to isolate and press the icons on the Go Talk with, in combination with starting out with her most favorite items, it is definitely possible for her to learn. It continues to be a very gradual process for our son, , but he understands now that he can get his favorite items using this device and it has cut down on frustration for him and has also enabled our family and friends the opportunity to get involved with the process too. We will see how it goes, knowing that this can change, like so many things for our children. I will be requesting an augmentative eval shortly since we've hit that year mark already. What does Angies speech pathologist say? Best, To: From: megsoracco@... My thing is, Angie is 8 now. She does not speak, no signs, no PECS. Is it too late for her to learn how to use it? We throws everything that does not spin or dangle. I need to get a video of her, doing her normal stuff to show everyone. I mean, she will NOT hold this device to use etc.
Guest guest
Hi , One of the benefits of having " slow " kids is that they are developmentally younger, so she's at her peak learning age of about 2 or 3 years developmentally - If 60 is the new 40 then for our kids 8 is the new 2!
