Has anyone had experience getting a special needs car seat through insurance?

Aden has outgrown his with the 5 point harness but isn't ready for a booster

with a regular seat belt. I've tried 2 providers for mobility equipment and they

both told me that I would have to get him a wheel chair and strap it into a van.

I looked online and found some seats that would work in my car, but the cost is

prohibitive. The insurance company said a car seat is on the list of durable med

equip they cover, but they require a pre-approval. Any suggestions on how to

work this out?

Thanks,

:  Have your doctor write out a script and a letter of medical

necessity for the seat...Insurance will then pay for it.  Be very specific

as to what type of seat you are looking for.

pre-approval normally means that you need a dr to adovcate. do you have a

developmental pediatrician.

I had called easter seals and would a vender for a shest harness for hte regular

seat belt. The kind the school bus uses. I don't have the info anymore because

as soon as I found it my son stopped messing with the shoulder strap.

Thanks for all the info. At this point Aden doesn't have any PT or OT because we

have been wait listed (a whole other issue). Our pediatrician has written the

insurance and we are waiting for a response. It's just really frustrating to not

be able to go anywhere safely with Aden. grrrr. But fingers crossed it will be

approved if I'm patient.

Thanks,

The 5 point harness is great, our even came with a booster seat. A lot

cheaper than a car seat, not hard to move from car to car. We just

stopped using it for my son last year at age 12. I highly recommend it,

as well. I think it was less than $200, and medicaid paid for it. Need

a letter of necessity from the doc and possibly a PT.

Good luck!

Joni

Nick, 13!
