Guest guest
Hi there, I am in Georgia-in metro Atlanta area in Gwinnett County. My 2 adult sons attended part of elementry school thru graduation here. All new schools & schools of excellence; with one in gifted & AP classes which falls under the special ed umbrella. Zero problems & both were prepared for university. Two of my three grandchildren are school age & also attend schools of excellence in Gwinnett County. Zero issues My youngest son, who has Down Syndrome, moderate-severe hearing impairment, severe-profound speech impairment (aphasia) & medical issues, has attended Gwinnett County schools since he was around age 17 months. He is now age 15 & half. Every school he attended has provided whatever we have requested on his IEP & without exception, he has had excellent teachers & aides. We did have a dicey time in 5th grade & again in 8th grade but the issues were not a reflection on what he was taught or provided nor what he learned. Both (seperate) issues were resolved to our satisfaction. It is my understanding that services & schools across GA are disparate despite GA State education rules & regs. I would like to suggest that you make contact thru the following links to obtain info on the area that you are moving to: Parent to Parent which can set you up with a parent from the area you seek as well as provide wealth of info on everything: http://p2pga.org/ Georgia Dept of Education, Special education division. I use this site often & it should be of assistance regarding educational aspects: http://public.doe.k12.ga.us/ci_exceptional.aspx Hope this helps. Both of the above links also have toll free phone numbers, will send you packets of info as well as have a live person to talk to. Best wishes, Kris > > We have been transferred to Ga. Guest guest
Kris, I must call you and your children " Lucky " . Gwinnett County is VERY BAD for caring for (or should I say good at abusing their children with special needs), according to numerous news stories I have heard in the past years. Remember one of the recent cases where the parents sewed a recorder into the child's shirt and recorded extreme physical abuse (not sure if it was Gwinnett, but I do know it was Metro Atlanta Area), verbal abuse, and neglect of that child with autism who came home black and blue the day before? It was all over the news. And that was not the only case in Metro Atlanta. If I am not mistaken, Gwinnett had a child die also. (One county did.) Like I said, consider your children surrounded by angels, but GA is not the place you want for your kids with special needs; I should rephrase that and say America is not the place for kids/families with special needs due to lack of available services and lack of wanting to give out avaialable services (Remember the current healthcare bill? I read it and it eliminates services for special needs.) Gwinnett may be a lesser of other evils in GA, but I highly recommend homeschooling if you move to GA. http://www.theautismnews.com/2009/05/18/mother-records-autistic-childs-alleged-a\ buse/ http://m.11alive.com/news.jsp?key=122383 http://www.docstoc.com/docs/6145537/GAO-Report--Special-Needs-Children-Abused-in\ -Schools Just my opinion, > > > > We have been transferred to Ga. Guest guest
Sue - kids are being abused all over the nation. Consider any ad one sees for the HUMANE SOCIETY to be really for kids and call it the HUMAN SOCIETY> As to the microphoned kid -whose parents have been charged with criminal charges for ILLEGAL RECORDING!!! That was NOT Gwinnet but either Dekalb or Fulton. Kids have died in Fulton, Dekalb, Umpkin, Stepahns, and I am sure others. Surely there must be an app for kids killed! Way too many. But Irma can tell you about the horros of Texas, we have people to talk about FL. No state is SAFE. We parents create the safety by being watchful and aware. My son got a great , warm , and loving education for the year he was in school in Lumpkin COunty, GA - better than anything he had in VA or in PA. Guest guest
Hi Sue, I do recall reading about different cases in GA & other states. The ones that you referenced did not happen in Gwinnett;however after I saw references to time out rooms/restraints/etc I became hyper vigilent & proactive by making sure that any & everyone involved with DJ had a very clear understanding of what our " rules " were concerning " discipline " . Inadvertantly freaked out one principal when he was hand delivered our (now annual) letter documenting what the school could not do & what we expect them to do. In very very detailed terms albeit in a non aggressive manner. It is appalling & sad to me that I submit this letter at the beginning of each school year, but because of cases such as you referenced, I feel it is a necessary documentation. Perhaps we have been lucky; however I have been a teacher & was a state level advocate long before I became DJ's mama. I can detect BS and/or bad vibes instantly & I have never been nor will I ever settle for " status quo " regarding anything much less my kiddos needs. That being said, it is probably a combination of luck of the draw in what teachers we have had, being involved, being observant & promoting/building relationships for the greater good re all 3 of my sons. I'm willing to cut teachers/staff/whatever entity some slack- about some things-which I think is really about just deciding what " battles " are important & which ones are not. However, no slack is given regarding punitives, neglect, assaults or incompetence. (That sounds harsh, but oh well) I know I am just one parent voicing my experiences thus far, but I was being totally honest about the past 13 years of educational experiences & teachers & other staff. Even the teachers in 5th & 8th grade that we had some issues with did not fail in teaching DJ or in obtaining what he needed in order to succeed. And the majority went far beyond what was expected or " required " in ways both large & small. There is no way that I could duplicate what those teachers accomplished over the years. Just as they could never duplicate what I have accomplished with DJ over the years. Coupled with DJ's need to have socialization opps outside of a home setting; at this point in our lives home schooling is not in his best interests. Just our personal experience to date. Guest guest
sounds like writing short stories is like therapy for you. My dr tried to get me to start drinking wine when I had insomnia.... I was afraid to even take one sip. I have not ever drank it that I recall and I don't want to feel sick. I have heard too many people say that wine makes them nauseous or gives them a headache. I have the bottle here but have never opened. My dr said that an ounce with lunch and supper would help my neck muscles relax and then I could sleep. Maybe I will try it someday. To: From: kaprisock@... Guest guest
Yes, Sara, i heard they have now made it illegal and inadmissable to place a recorder on your child, which is B.S. Did you mean to say kids have died in my county? s? If so, when?? Very interested to know this. Thanks, P.S. And yes, sadly, I do know all about most of the abuse throughout this nation. It's sad and heartbreaking; what is up with America? > > > > > > > > We have been transferred to Ga. Guest guest
I was trying to find a link for the one I remember in gwinnett. I am pretty certain I saw it on the news instead of the Internet, but nevertheless, I think you got the point. It is great that you are on top of things with the no restraint letter, etc... I think you have realized it just has to be that way. Even if my son *could* attend school, he has apraxia and is very vulnerable to abuse because of that. It has happened before (Barrow) and I can honestly say I know for sure it will never happen again because he will not attend public school. I know we talked about it before, but we will have to meet up sometime since we live so close. (I just have to find the time). Are you on Facebook? I am the blue character with hearts. Guest guest
You can check in your county thru the county mortality meeting. " Stakeholders " attend. In our county that means DFCS, Sheriff, DA, Juvenile Judge and someone from CASA. only heard about Stephans when I was asking about Lumpkin. Guest guest
Hi Sue, perhaps I am a protective mom but even with my neuro typical kids I made it clear (in writing) that no corporal punishment was to ever be used. Since my other 2 sons attended many schools in several states it became a habit & was easy to do for DJ. I just did not know about time out rooms or restraints until a few years ago, so I updated the letter to include them. Lol,it is only a 1 page letter but includes everything from withholding food/drink to any adversive I could think of. I do not hit or put my kids in restraints, etal & so there is no way I would ever accept someone else doing so. I believe in positive reinforcement. Of course that does not extend to anyone harming my child. Then I def. believe in adversives: jail. Happy New Year. Kris > > > > > > > > > > We have been transferred to Ga. Guest guest
Howdy,   I see T says her son will not attend public school because of his apraxia. Darell just got diagnosed with autism and apraxia in a addition to his downs on 9-9-2010 . I have been so busy researching ds-asd that I haven't addressed to problems and solutions for apraxia. Can you give me any information why apraxia makes public school difficult ? ________________________________ To: Sent: Sat, January 1, 2011 2:43:38 AM Subject: Re: interested in Ga/ B  Hi Sue, perhaps I am a protective mom but even with my neuro typical kids I made it clear (in writing) that no corporal punishment was to ever be used. Guest guest
I live in America and children are killed every year in school here with restraints. The teachers most often are not prosecuted and continue working in schools . If you want more information you can google restraint and seclusion bill 20010 . I think it was hr2868 not sure of the number. But the bill passed the senate and the house was sent to committee where it did not get voted on it just died. Guest guest
The bill died because it was changed from the original bill and many advocacy organizations opposed it. The bill included seclusion and restraint to be allowed to be placed on a students IEP . The advocacy groups felt that it would give schools permission to use it and abuse it. Incidentally it was a last minute deal by my own former Ct Senator Dodd to get something passed with a bipartisan margin. I wonder if he would have felt differently if his own two young daughters were restrained in school. Guest guest
Does Darrell have apraxia of speech, or is it more general apraxia (coordination disorder)? I can't speak for T's reasons, but I'm thinking they may have something to do with having a child who can't tell you when they've been mistreated. Guest guest
My son does not have apraxia as a dx, but he could not tell me when he was being abused. It is vital for the protection of our children that we make good friends with all ancillary staff in our schools. My son was saved from abuse because a para in school got word to be (not directly - she wanted to save her job) on what was going on. If we had not had a personal relationship, even knowing what was happening, she would not have told me. Cafeteria staff, janitors, volunteers, para's and sometimes even other teachers will have to be the protection for your child. I believe that we start practicing when our kids are in school so that we can create community supports and circles of support and protection as they grow older. > > > Does Darrell have apraxia of speech, or is it more general apraxia > (coordination disorder)? > > I can't speak for T's reasons, but I'm thinking they may have > something to do with having a child who can't tell you when they've been > mistreated. > > > > Sent from my iPhone > > On Jan 1, 2011, at 9:50 AM, darell brooks <codysister@...<codysister%40yahoo.com>> > wrote: > > > Howdy, > > > > I see T says her son will not attend public school because of his > > apraxia. Guest guest
Actually, my son (thank God) won't attend public school because of immune deficiency /dysfunction which prevents him from attending like a typical child. BUT if he did not have this condition, he would never return anyway. The reason is not really because of the apraxia, but because he was one of the children abused by school officials when he was in school before we got a diagnosis. Thank goodness I never told them how much sign language he really did know (they wanted a list of words). He was able to tell me in sign (at 4 years old) and crying simultaneously what happened at school that day. This also should have been my first clue that his memory was actually a good one to remember that until he got home and sat on the potty. I ignored warning signs (like when we saw the parapro in public at a store and he refused to look up at her and kept his head bowed down the entire time-I should have realized something then, as my child usually is too friendly with everyone) > > > > > > > > > > > > > > We have been transferred to Ga. Guest guest
But sometimes, these people that you have mentioned *are* the very ones abusing your child, which was the case for my child. I am just glad my child is alive and *looks* alive. I could show you a picture of when he was in school and my child looked like he should be in a casket (weight wise, color-wise, and general overall happiness). During the next couple of months after being removed from school, my child regained color, a smile, and weight. He was a different child. Sometimes you just know as a parent that the placement is not right. Although I ignored warning signs, it was pretty bad when he told me and I cried and cried that I did not notice warning signs and that I allowed my child to be harmed. I felt guilty that I even had the notion to begin with that I was unable to homeschool him efficiently. (I homeschool my others.) In the few years since he has been out of a public school environment, I have heard so much abuse and seen so much abuse occurring; I feel like I got my son out before it got *really* bad (and it was already bad). I, as a loving mom, just cannot phathom what these school employees are even thinking and how this continues to happen in any school without teachers and officials being prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. It is like the *parents* have become the bad guys and the abusers have become the good guys; what is up with that? The problem, unfortunately, is we no longer live in a country that we thought we all lived in. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > We have been transferred to Ga. Guest guest
I'm so sorry about what happened to your son. That's so very wrong. Guest guest
The good news is we do not dwell on it , but I will never forget it. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > We have been transferred to Ga.
