If my son walked in with a bandaid on his eyebrow because he had shaved it off I

think I would have tears of joy! Just the ability to operate a shaver and shave

his own eyebrow and then to actually be able to open a bandaid wrapper and put

it over the bare spot would be such an increase in new abilities that I would be

overjoyed! What a blessing that he can do such independant things!!!! And how

funny!! Thanks for sharing! :) karmen mom to talon 14

If only it was school picture day. Every child should have one year

commemorating their discovery of how to cut hair or shave an eyebrow! Those are

my favourite photos.

OMG.

DJ just appeared with a bandaid over his right eyebrow. Like some of the

kiddos, he abhors bandaids. And I mean abhors them...

He won't let me peek under it but guys, hubby & I think he might have shaved his

eyebrow off.

I know this is awful but everytime I look at him I feel like ROFL. Especially

so when I picture his OMG moment, finding a bandaid & carefully applying it so

it covers his entire eyebrow area...

This should prove interesting when we go to his grandmother's for Thanksgiving

if he only has one eyebrow....

ROFLMAO (I can't help it-he is gonna look so very wierd-with or without that

bandaid!)

Kris- who was trying so hard to " allow " DJ to be independent teen & now

re-thinking that wisdom....sigh. Wonder how long it takes to grow back...

Karmen, I hear you. BUT, neither dad or I knew he could open & apply a bandaid.

Bandaids are not welcomed by him-his intolerance is so great that he screams

anew after a blood test when staff ATTEMPTS to apply one.

So you can understand that I immediately went into mom alert status when I spot

this Spiderman bandaid on his eyebrow.

As to the operating a shaver to shave, that took the last part of 8th grade, all

that summer & all of 9th grade to get him to tolerate me doing it, then him

holding my hand, then him holding the razor for nano seconds. I purposefully

bought an inexpensive battery operated one that is water proof so we would not

have to deal with sensory issues re shaving cream. And my heart/mind stamina is

not great enough to consider a razor with a blade. I would die of fright before

he did.

Like alot of things with DJ, he will just suddenly do a skill or suddenly

initiate some thing worked on for centuries. So when he started going into the

bathroom & shaving on his own this past summer, I did not interfere unless he

locked the door.

I got excited about it & shed a few tears but he was not consistent. Right

before school started this year he suddenly initiated shaving daily. Sometimes

several times a day.

Then Dad noticed hairless arms. Recently I noticed swatches he had shaved off

his back. Now possibly a missing eyebrow. It feels like having a 2 year old

doing the hair cutting thing.

I am not into regimented anything, but methinks I may need to put up a chart

that shows days & time to shave only his face. I really don't want to do this

because I'd rather DJ had some semblance of control & autonomy- not just rely on

a chart schedule. Will have to ponder how to do this without resorting to me

shaving him or standing over him or having a pain in the buttocks schedule.

The newest " triumph " that made me dance a jig is aftershave " cologne " . About a

month or so ago I would notice an aftershavey smell on his neck. Well it turns

out that he was using the pre-shave stuff that softens hair as aftershave. His

endocrine doc suggested it but DJ hated me using it so I had put it away under

the sink.

When I made this new discovery, I recalled that he had been gifted with real

aftershave by his teacher one year & I dug it out. It sprays on & smells yummy.

I explained what it was as I showed DJ & sprayed some on my hands & patted his

neck. He of course scowled & tried to wipe it off. I let it go but left it

with his razor. Somewhere during this timeframe he tried it on his own. I made

yummy sounds if I smelled it.

I currently rue the day I had such a bright idea. Dear son now FUMIGATES

himself with the stuff. I hid it the other day under the sink. HA! He found

it & the pre-shave & put BOTH on self. GAGGAGGAGAG. I had to fumigate his bed

& room & him.

Pre-shave has been garbaged. I happened to do his bath the other day so I got

to see what he does with the cologne. He actually squirts it on his neck

left-center-right. I almost fell on the floor in amazement. Sensory issues

and spray??!!!!!!!!

Now I just have to figure out a way to tell him (so that it sticks) this is fine

but only once a day NOT a bazillion times a day.

O well, I guess if he never learns to wipe his hinney, his lavish use of men's

cologne will knock people out before any potty pants odor does....

Yep, it's comedy central in the ole homestead nowadays...

Kris, who figures if the bandaid stays on then the eyebrow is definately gone.

Hmm, which poses yet another ponderable indeed regarding exactly how much Master

DJ is aware of in the realm of morality issues (right/wrong...non verbal

" fibs " ..hiding " evidence " etal)

How about a pix of DJ just shaving left face, right face, chin without

comment. Just like a reminder?

BTW _ Elie barely tolerates having someone shave his face for him (thus the

chin hair). But he LOVES gel shaving creme??????? And of course no

smelling stuuff cause MOM would die. My asthma would have me out on the

floor were he to use smelly stuff!

My family is laughing as I read to them what DJ is doing. My son, Talon HATES

bandaids too. He runs from a shaver and hates a hair cut. He hates an electric

shaver so I bought him some razors and shaving cream. He does better with that

except when I try to do his mustache, he keeps licking off the shaving cream. .

.. . He does not hold still so I just barely take the razor over his skin.....

takes a while to get the job done but no ER visits! We also do not use any

colognes or things with fragrance. Too many allergies around here. We don't

use deoderant either. Keep sharing DJ stories! karmen mom to talon 14 ds/asd,

Please take pictures for future reference! How smart of DJ to fix this problem,

HAHAHA!

Pete's alopecia sometimes manifests itself with one eyebrow being barely there,

or one eye's eyelashes almost disappearing. He also has had underarm hair under

one arm only, and bit of a mustache on only one side of his mouth. He's

looking more symmetrical these days.

Good for you that you are taking this in stride! There is something so

wonderful about seeing DJ's emerging maturity - to do something that most kids

try at some point in their lives, and then -also the same deal- try to cover up

the big boo-boo... HAahaha!

(BTW, do you think he scraped his skin at all? Maybe there was some bleeding

under there? )

Thanks for sharing-
