For me, the autism diagnosis explained so many of Darwyn's quirky behaviours that it was a relief. Also, if you do get the diagnosis of ASD then you may have more funding and therapy options available through govt programs and also school. We chose to spend most of our time and money on behavior based therapy (such as floortime or ABA therapy) and communication tools (such as PECs - a picture system) and this has really helped him. If you tell us where you live, others in the area may have suggestions about funding. Much depends on where you live and what's available. Also - he's still the same sweet son and brother the day after he gets a new label. Its just something that can help you figure out how to help him grow and be happy. I am a mother of 3. My youngest son, Riley, is 4 years old. We are going to his ASD evaluation on Wednesday. This is kind of a bitter sweet moment for us. We want the best services for him but we don't really know what services are available for dual diagnoses. I would like to believe that the Down syndrome services we receive now is covering it all.
