Guest guest
Hi lovely beings! Just returned from meeting with school ST & assistive tech person about replacing DJ's augmentative comm. device. The one they think is the best " fit " for him & age appropriate is the DynaVox V. It costs over $8,000.00. Ok?! How in the world do people afford that???????????? I almost fell out of the chair. Here I was concerned that they would quibble about purchasing an ipad.....HA! Speaking of ipad/pod/ anything with " i " . School system cannot & will not currently purchase apple anything. Much to the tech's regret as she is big into all things tech & personally uses the ipad at home... Oh well. No ipod/ipad for DJ thru school. They have assured me that all the functions & more that ipad has is on the V. It will take a couple of months to get in. Due to the cost, the Dyna V has to be individually purchased, all sorts of paper work & dept chains to go through before order is placed. At least now I know why it takes so long to get a device thru school. When we do get the device, I will report back on it's functionality, etc. It is supposed to be very very easy & fast to program, has internet, has ability to be used as a remote, play movies/videos/watch tv, pics, symbols or word, has ability (with add on) to use with telephone (cool!), durable, smallish enough to carry ala messenger bag. Has ability to speak what is typed/selected, has PARENTAL CONTROLS(!!), headphone jacks, can backup or download whatever. There's more functions that I cannot remember. I just wish it were smaller cause I am concerned about teachers or DJ lugging it everywhere & actually using it. We will see. One thing I am excited about is that we can program stuff into it on Sunday, so that DJ can tell everyone what he did over the weekend..or what his fave music or movie or whatever is. And more. This aspect alone should help open things up socially in profound ways. Anyone have anything to report on their own devices? I would love to hear about experiences to keep up as well as to share with school team. Hugs to all, Kris-who does not & probably never will have an extra 8K just laying around...
