Guest guest
My son bite himself when staff attempted to get his haircut with the barber. He's only been on the meds for about 6weeks so I can't decide if this is side effects or bad bedside manner on the side of the barber. I let them know to have the barber cut in a fashion that they could stop halfway if needed so as not to send my son into a sensory situation where he feels he must bite as the only choice. Next step would be to take back haircuts and have the barber just do trims around his ears and neckline. ICF staff will also be letting neurology know during his next visit to the facility and see what he thinks as far as if side effects are playing a prt in this. Self biting is 100% new. He did used to bite as a child but it was always another kid (usually his twin sister). I also told them to have a plush toy available because he will often bite something before someone. Any other insights? oldest son 14 with DS/ASD severe MR daughter 14 ADD and normal teen stuff youngest son 2 (3 in Sept.) Guest guest
Hi  I know when my daughter was on depakote her self injurious behaviours escalated out of control. The doctors never attributed it to the depakote because they usually use it to stop behaviour problems. They blamed her SIBs on everything else in the book. Then miraculously when she came off the depakote all the SIBs stopped. She has not banged her head, hit, pinched or bitten anyone (including herself) since being off the meds. I think it is a little hard to believe the meds didn't have something to do with it.  Ali, mom to Amy 6 DS/ASD, 5 and Olivia 3 Stratford, ON, Canada Subject: Haircut / Depakote / Biting To: Received: Monday, August 23, 2010, 9:53 PM  My son bite himself when staff attempted to get his haircut with the barber.
