Guest guest
Are any of you parents aware of the autoimmune disease called PANDAS, Pediatric Autoimmune Nueropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Strep?? My daughter with Down Syndrome suddenly developed OCD's and TICs at the age of 10. From there she lost ability to read, write and now doesn't even speak and is in her own world. Hence...autism diagnosis at 10. But what really happened is that she had a strep throat gone undetected and it developed into PANDAS. PANDAS is the only reason a child would suddenly develop (overnight) strange behaviors. I wonder how many of our DS kids are affected by this and given other labels. It affects kids before puberty and can be cured with a long dose of antibiotics. But my daughter was never treated because eight years ago, it wasn't widely recognized. If left undetected it can cause damage to the basal ganglia of the brain, which is what happened to my daughter. If you want to know more, there is a lot of info on google.
