Guest guest
Hi Dawn, Welcome to the group. I am certain that someone may have some good advice to assist with the throwing issues. Charlyne Mom to Zeb DS 17 Subject: new memeber intro To: Date: Wednesday, May 19, 2010, 6:33 PM Â Hi I am happy to be here, look forward to sharing whatever I may know and getting invaluable info for myself and my son. Jelani is 7, DS-PDD born a micropeemie weighing 1 lb 6oz and has come a long way. He has mild hearing loss in one ear, visually he's blind w/o glasses, and he is not very verbal. He attends a local elementary school in the special ed. class w/ 7 other children whose dx is Autism and DS. He'll be having his annual IEP next week and this will be important as he is transitioning to a new school within the district as he enters the 3rd grade. He has behaviors that concern me, such as throwing his glasses off, throwing my phone, throwing anything he can get his hands on within his reach, even throwing the bar of soap in the bath. This started 3 years ago and he does this throwing only occasionally during the day. He also craves oral stim so much that he is mouth tapping and teeth grinding constantly. Any advice for me regarding the throwing, mouth tapping, and teeth grinding?? The OT has tried several things that haven't made a difference. thanks in advance! Guest guest
Hi Dawn- Welcome! I am mom to Liam 5 with DS-Autism, and boy does he love to throw things! Seems like we have been working on this one a long time. I have tried a few different things, the most successful one for us lately has been to just give over the top praise when Liam does not throw, like when he hands me the cup. We get pretty excited and say " thank you " for not throwing " . Sounds kinda strange I guess but Liam loves praise. mom to (14) (6) Liam (5) we live in Minnesota! To: From: charlyne1121@... Guest guest
Hi , nice to meet you. I give praise alot too. Infact, Jelani now says " okay " when I say no throwing please. This is a big deal for my little nonverbal guy! Guest guest
Hi Dawn, Our son Cole 4 has DS and Autism and he throws things too. He throws all his toys one by one until he empties his toy container and then plays with the container. He has hit people with flying toys and so far no harm has been done to them but I'm afraid he eventually will hurt someone. He treats people like things. Lately, he is turning things over ...... chairs, end tables, pack-n-go, infant swing, thankfully noone was in them. He has even thrown food and his cup at restaurants. A few close calls but he has not hurt anyone yet. Soooo embrassing but people have been understanding about it. To stop him from his cup throwing we have started giving it back to him and saying all done and have him put it on the table. He continues to throw it some but not as much. He also craves oral stim and does the mouth tapping and teeth grinding. He also chews on his hands and clothes. I don't have the answers but I know how you feel. Guest guest
Hi Ruth, Thankyou for sharing, it's actually a big comfort to know I'm not alone because you are the first person that has said rheir child also mouth taps. My son also turns things over, knocks things down, esp. advertisement signs, orange cones, and in grocery stores it's a challenge to keep him from tossing food items. So I save a favorite toy to keep him busy while I shop, till he gets bored and throws it too. Funny thing is my son didn't fit all the criteria for Autism, just some, so he's been dx with PDD. But he displays so many of the Autistic traits. Thanks for sharing about Cole, we have out hands tied with our special little guys. Glad we're here to gain insight to what will work best to help our boys from those in our shoes. Guest guest
is 5 and still likes to throw. It's getting less over time but it's still an issue. We've been trying to give him a bouncy ball or balloon to play with and tell him " throw ball " ...he seems to be getting the idea. Guest guest
Dawn, First and foremost, welcome to the group! There is tons of information here so I hope you don't get overwhelmed. Sometimes that happens. This group is my lifeline and honestly, I don't know that I could function with out the great people who share their stories. My son Jake is 11 (ds/asd). He does both the throwing and mouth patting. It comes and goes with intensity. When it was at his worst and he was younger, I bought metal buckets and plastic buckets. I allowed him certain types of toys tha he could dump and drop. I am not sure if he like the dropping (watching something fall or fly across the room) or the noise it makes when it happens. I think at times he obsesses about both. I used those plastic bunching balloons you can buy at any cheap store. They blow up easy, they are cheap, and they make lots of noise while giving great visual stimulation. I also use the foam door hangers that are available at walmart and art stores. The kind that kids decorate. They come in sets of like 6 and they are different colors, and they are once again cheap. He uses those to pat and to chew on at times. Once it gets old, it gets tossed and a new one is given. Holly
Guest guest
Hi Dawn  Welcome to the group. My daughter Amy is 6 and she used to constantly throw things and walk into rooms and clear tables. She was very destructive. I am not exactly what happened but she just all of a sudden stopped doing it. It happened around the same time she started SK, went off her seizure medications and started carrying around fidget toys. She no longer clears tables or throws anything. She will actually pick something up and hold onto it for several minutes before putting it down. It is so nice. I have a feeling it was a sensory thing and now that she has a fidget toy available at all times she is doing much better.  She also used to grind her teeth and I noticed that stopped once we started the GF/CF diet and got her stomach problems under control. She will still tap her mouth once in awhile but not near to the extent she used to. I remember trying so many different things with the OT as well and none of them worked. It is very frustrating.  I hope you are able to find your " secret solution " to stopping these behaviours.  Ali Mom to Amy, 6 ASD/DS, 5 and Olivia 3 Subject: new memeber intro To: Received: Wednesday, May 19, 2010, 6:33 PM  Hi I am happy to be here, look forward to sharing whatever I may know and getting invaluable info for myself and my son. He also, incidentally, throws fidget toys. No advice, Dawn, just empathy! Guest guest
Thanks for all your replies. Jelani was a good boy today for a whole 10 minutes in the grocery store.. (I shop fast) We ventured in hand in hand not using his stroller and he was being very behaved as I chose the items. I was engaging him in helping me find the tomatoes, lettuce, etc. Then no sooner that we go to the check-out he clears the candy section. So I had to sit him down on the floor (with a line of people behind us) because he was going into a throwing fest. But at least he lasted 10 minutes worth of shopping. That's an improvement Shortly after we're home and getting out of the car and he throws his glasses 10 feet away and a neighbor picks them up and brings them back to him. She then says, you are so handsome with your glasses on, don't take them off. What did he do then? He reaches up and snatches the neighbor's glasses off her face and throws them. sigh.... > > > Subject: new memeber intro > To: > Received: Wednesday, May 19, 2010, 6:33 PM > > > > Hi I am happy to be here, look forward to sharing whatever I may know and getting invaluable info for myself and my son.
