Hi Group,

Our little Cole 4yr old DS and waiting for diagnosis of ASD, had his tonsils and

adenoids taken out yesterday and replacement of ear tubes.  He refused to drink

anything before we left the hospital and is continuing to refuse.  I'm giving

his meds (pain, nausea/vomiting) with a dropper but he is holding it in his

mouth and letting it droll out.  He is crying and fussing and little sleep.  He

appears to be in pain or mad or both.  This afternoon he has thrown up twice

after being very agitated and looking as though he did not know what was going

on (I believe he was feeling nausea or sickness).  He is nonverbal but is

signing eat and drink but just puts the cup to his mouth and then throws it.  I

know he is hungry and thirsty and it is breaking my heart to see him go

without.  His doctor said we've done everything we can and he may have some

swelling and ordered a steroid for him to see if that helps and if no change,

tomorrow he will have to be

taken to ER for IV's.   Please pray for him.  Thanks, Ruth

Ruth, we went through the same thing w/Conor and did wind up having to take

him to the E.R. for and I.V. He seemed to feel great after that but our ENT

did not keep him in the hospital overnight, so the next day we started all

over again with Conor not drinking. We had to take a little syringe, hold

him down and force water and Pediasure down his throat.I forget how

much..every 10 min. It was awful, so I can relate to how you're feeling.

Maybe you could get some sort of pain meds that are inserted rectally??

If he continues to refuse pain meds, he won't be able to drink. See if you

can get the pain meds in suppository form. If the particular med he is

taking does not come that way, a compounding pharmacy will be able to make

it in suppository form. It wasn't fun, but was a lifesaver when Logan had

his adenoids out.
