Guest guest
Hi, Everyone....Amy.....up to the age of 10 y/o, Gareth had 3 - 4 words or only growled or pointed till he was put on Risperdal. Then, he started talking and communicating. I say talking, but he never really got past 2-4 word sentences. I will take that. The funny thing is, by 1st grade (age 7), he could read sight words and read sentences when looking at the words, but could not turn around and say 'the cat is black.' He had to look at the words to talk. I truly believe all our kids can communicate in some form.....it's just that each and every one needs a special key to unlock that box in their brain to enable that. I am also a firm believer in 'closed caption' on TVs......that helped Gareth a lot with his sight words/reading. We got a used wheelchair for Gareth when he was 13 y/o because of the flop/drop and his hip dysplasia. F & D can be due to over excitement/anxiety due to the autism or from tiredness/weaknesses due to hip dysplasia (DS muscle weakness). Make sure the hips are checked out, too. Take care, Everyone.
