Guest guest
Hi, Everyone.....Dorothy....welcome to the group. My son, Gareth, is 21 y/o with DS/ASD/OCD. He was dx'd with ASD at age 5-6, but we never had the opportunity for ABA since that came into play later. He went through the regular classrooms with a 1:1 aide till 5th grade. By then, they were changing classes and he had a major breakdown as far as noise, non consistency, etc. He couldn't handle the banging lockers and screeching high voices of the 5-6th graders. That's when he went into a resource room setting.....getting academics but very little changing of classes. By HS, he was still doing RR's for math, science, reading, etc., but changing classes for them and had no problems with that. In hind sight, I don't know what I'd do. I was always pro academics and we moved every 2-3 yrs, so it was hard for him (and me) getting use to each districts methods/fights, etc. If the chance for an autistic school came up, I probably would have seriously checked into it. At least they would have understood his quirks throughout the yrs!!! Take care, Everyone. Margaret
