Hi, Everyone....a friend of mine e-mailed to see why I was angry with the

recent posts about supplements and biomedical info. I am NOT angry with

anyone but feel the need that newer parents be given the opportunity/choices

for their path in dealing with their kids. Us older ones have all tried the

'new cures for autism' at one point in our kids lives and found them to be

unrealistic for all kids. Believe me, there have been plenty of scams and

'formulas' in the past, too. Yes, Risperdal worked wonders for Gareth and

many other kids. Biomeds/supplements may help other kids. ABA,

Floortime, and other methods may help other kids. Please.......just keep an

open

mind. Try them all if you have to. Like I have said before, keep charts on

your kids' behaviors to help you judge each therapy that you try. If

you're doing one kind, whether biomed or Risperdal or ABA, and you don't see

any changes within a couple of months, then, step back and regroup. The

whole point is to find what is best for your kid.....not just going with the

'in crowd.'

I guess my point is that the newer parents need to realize that there isn't

one solid cure for our kids.....if there was, then there wouldn't be so

many autistic kids in the school districts. Autism is 1/100 or less

kids.......if there was a sure cure, would that number still be so high? Just

remain realistic.

I am very proud of Gareth's accomplishments on Risperdal/SSRI med combo the

past 10 yrs.....he started talking, excelled academically, and went on to

PSU (Lifelink) like he dreamed of doing. THAT is why I stress everyone at

least try Risperdal. It is not for all kids, as Sherry pointed out with

, but if I didn't try it with Gareth............well, I would have ended

up in the loony bin and he'd still be growling/pointing, up all night,

Master Houdini, teeth ground down to the gums, SIBs, and have the ODD label

along with the DS/Autism/OCD label.

Take care, Everyone.

Margaret
