Oh geez Sara - I cannot believe this. Thank goodness you put it all together -

you're a good Mama. I guess it never ceases to amaze me what goes on out there

but it still stings doesn't it. So glad you found a new worker rather quickly

and Elie got his tapes and a trip to the car wash - all very important. I'm

sure you'll be keeping close tabs on things. We who are burned once take a far

more proactive role in watching over things. Job well done Sara - may 2010 be

the year for Elie!

Oh Sara

This is just so wrong. Can you put in an official complaint about this person

somewhere?

Can you complain to the BBB about her " babysitting " when she's supposed to be

watching Elie? Can you slap her silly? runover her with your car? Grrrr. Let me

at her.

This is so scary. I'm so sorry.

no this isn't a paen of great news for Elie. This week I had to fire (a

first for me) the day support person. I found out that all the things about

Elie's work that she was telling me wass - how to put this politely-

LIES!!! Three weeks ago (just after New YEars) we took Elie back to his

homein the mountain community,. Since it was the first of the year, we went

to the store to get Elie his new calendar. Those of you who have heard

about ELie know that he really relys on his calendar to keep his world in

order.

We went to the Dollar Tree where supposedly he has worked for 4 months on a

regular basis. No one in the store recognized hime! Elie recognized

nothing in the store. When I went to the section he supposedly had been

working in - NOTHING- He had not been in this place on a regular basis.

Even asking him yes no questions about his work - where was the trash, Look

the shelves are empty - NOTHING> So I asked the manager if he had been

working there -NO!!!!

Then I found out thru a whisper down the lane that this day support person

had been taking him to her house - where she was BABYSITTING pre-schoolers.

ELIE HATES being around little kids who are not babies.

Then the eye doctor told me that he had serious allergic reaction in his

eyes (not just the one with the contact - the other one as well. He wanted

to know who was smoking around him - a very high allergen for my son. OF

course it was the day support person - she says she was smoking OUT THE

WINDOW while in the car with Elie!! We had spoken about this OTEN as

cigarettes are a really big deal for him on a number of levels health wise.

So I fired her but only after I had interviewed and hired a new person. So

three days after I fired her, she writes me that she wants a service

termination letter. I guess for unemployment peurposes, but I sent her a

termination letter. I am not writing anything else.

Anyway. Today he started with the new person. He went to the library ,

checked out all the VHR Sesame Street that they have (10) and he went to the

car wash

.. I spoke to him and he told me about both places. WHEW! Constant

checking .

This is what worries me about adult programs. I have repeatedly seen

community workers in the community with clients talking on their cell phones

and doing all sorts of thing EXCEPT paying attention to their companions. I

think it is so unfair and when I was a Director, I wrote people up for stuff

like that. Though I did learn to be a bit of a job coach for them, " listen,

you are really good with so and so when you are focused. Decide whether you

want to remain focused or get a new job. " Sometimes when staff knew their

work was valued they took it more seriously.

I don't know what works best, having agencies supervise staff or family

members - the " new " way. I just read a book on this and it seems half dozen

of one, six of the other. Sara, you will have to tell us if you agree or

not.

However, by sharing your story Sara you have helped us all learn what we

need to do for our children - who will become adults sooner rather than

later. Diligence and advocacy being key. I give you a lot of credit for

not kicking her in the shins and I would have been tempted to ask for 4

months worth of salary back.

Do you have mixed feelings about your source of info? Such as thanks for

telling me, wish you could have told me sooner?

The whole point of being out in the community is that there aren't myriad

levels of people 'watching'. The whole scary part of being out in the

community is that until the community pulls Elie in, he is at the mercy of

the person who is SUPPOSED to be taking him out in the community.'The irony

is she filed DAILY reports - most of which we now must assume are bogus, she

met with our s/c OUT IN THE COMUNITY doing his 'thing', but she was mostly

lying.

She wrote me this morning to ask WHY she was terminated. I told her in my

original letter that " Elie's needs had changed " . i have been warned NOT to

be direct and tell her exactly why because then she can try to refute each

item. So I am not - only giving her a termination letter without more clear

reason.

I knew something was wrong because he was home so much between Thansgiving

and NY's. otherwise I might not have known for longer. HE was already

starting his usual mantra - " No go out, no go with XXXX. Stay home at

Elie's house. We cannot have that!!!

Wow! What agency is this person through? I assume you reported her to her

supervisors and all?

Glad you found this out now and no big time damage was done to all the hard work

you have put into Elie.

The issue is that I hired her under slef-determination. There is no

agency. IT is all my fault. There is a support coordinator who must have a

face to face meeting with Elie and his staff - the person he lives with and

the day support person. But the day support person -(if one is interested

in doing nothing and getting paid) pulled a fst one.

I just got a call from - who took Elie to The Dollar Tree again today

and Elie didn;'t know where the toys were, where the bathroom was - he

ALWAYS knows twhere those things are!!!!.

YAH - well I am pretty pissed I can tell you. This woman had all the right

words - she even wrote lovely things about Elie on F/B. But she scammed

me. And she shorted Elie which really makes me mad.

Wait until Unemployment calls or writes me.

Sara,

Did this person work for an agency? How did you meet her to hire her? I

would write someone a letter detailing what did and did not do, grrrrrr. I

trust no person until it is validated and earned.

Guess I needed to read more post before commenting. Would it be worth the

No - I advertised and interviewed and checked her references. She just

figured (I think) after a few months that she could get paid for doing

nothing.

She will not work in this field again unless she moves. But mountain people

don't move. I have covered the three contiguous counties - she won't work

in this field again!

Sara,

Very glad you caught this person abusing Elie's state funds. This is

uncalled for, of course did this person really think that she was going to

get away knowing how Elie's moms is such a great advocate? All within time

indeed, glad her hand was caught in the cookie jar. I know 4 months but glad

it was not year or years until detected which several families who I know

found out later who I know have shared similar stories.

Falsify reports, my goodness, at least you have proof that Dollar Tree

personnel can vouch that Elie has not been working. Always something or

someone always abusing the system using the most vulnerable people

w/disAbilities.

Wishing you well here & very glad you found a replacement. Lots of hugs &

wishing Elie the best to move forward once again w/ the provided supported

services allotted to him.

Funny thing is that just before I fired her - this active FB person who also

played FV with me, disappeared from both places - obliteratead.

Elie had his first day with his new day support person - of course it was

not good - melt down in the library (not 10 Sesame Street tapes), then

begging for food - first b'fast fast food, then chocolate milk WAWA and

cookies (which the new lady got him!!!:`(), then meltdown in Walmart because

he wanted to buy a toy!!! He never wants to buy toys.

And then to top it off- going to his beloved car wash (shower car?) he had

hysterics in the car.

BUT _ she called me last nite and realized that this was new person syndrome

and she wasn't giving up. Thank goodness.

LOL...such bondness, getting to know Elie.

Glad she is not going to give up, look forward to updates within this new

transition.

Keeping my fingers cross here that she will find a way to work around Elie &

be fit for him.
