Guest guest
IF you have a prescription form an SLP for AT, then either/both school and MEdiciaid can pay for it. School witll pay for one if it is prescribed and written into her IEP that she needs to have this device and that goals are then written on how to use it. When she outgrows the simpler one, the school can re-cycle it. IF it is purchased thru MEdicaid, generally then it is hers. > > > I went to this expo this week and was in awe of the technology. Guest guest
School is the one that has had devices for her but I doubt they would pay for me to have it at home. Does anyone have one that they send back and forth? I would be afraid of theft or losing it. > > > > > > > I went to this expo this week and was in awe of the technology. Guest guest
Depending on the school, if the child NEEDS the item, then usually you can get it to come home as well. Maybe Charlyne can answer how one does that?? I never had any problem with that but I know that is a big issue some places. Guest guest
Hi Nereida, I tried to reply to your post last night and after typing a lengthy response, my computer deleted it. I didn't have the patience to retype it last night. AT has come a long way. The possiblities are endless. I am not certain of your daughter's specifics regarding communciation. Does she have speech? Does she have specific IEP goals and a plan in place to communicate?  Are the goals and plan meeting her needs? If any of these questions are no then you can request an IEP meeting and ask for a comprehensive AT eval. AT can be used not just to address speech but any form of communication and educational goals. There are books on tape, www.bookshare.org, text to speech programs and speech to text programs, programs for writing and educational programs for math, history etc that coincide with the basic curriculum. The newer advanced speech to text programs cannot recognize our children's speech deficits though. If after having her evaluated you are not pleased with the school's evaluation, written report, then you have the right to ask for an independent evaluation at the district's expense. You cannot ask for a specific AAC device but can request that the evaluation include that area. If the evaluation, may it be school or independent, finds that an AAC device and other specific software is recommended then medicare could pay for the device and possibly the software. The device would be her voice that would travel with her at all times, home and school. If the school pays for the device and you show need for home then the device would also travel from home to school. The IEP would need to reflect goals for school/home goals that could be wrapped around transition goals for community and personal independent access, keyboarding goals, learning to email etc. It should also include parent and school staff training together with student training by a qualified trainer. I hope this answers some of your questions. It's all about need and wording of the IEP.
