What is different between severe and moderate MR?

It sounds like you got a great eval. is very uncooperative when they try

to test him! I wonder where he's at. He sure is smart at figuring out how to

get what he wants! But if it isn't his idea, he just isn't interested.

Well, it has been confirmed. Emelinne does have the dual diagnosis of DS-ASD. I

learned alot yesterday from the staff at TEACCH. Also, for the first time they

said she was severe MR instead of moderate MR and they explained everything

about why she is the way she is. They also told me I should not feel guilty

because she has always been receiving the services she should have been getting

such as being in a TEACCH class and ABA.

I joined this board 5 months ago and it has been so helpful, so much information

and support. Thank you.

Her IQ is lower than people said it was. She is at a toddler level. I always

knew she was but on all her IEPs it said moderate. Not that it changes anything,

she is who she is and always will be. She actually cooperated beautifully

yesterday for over 3 hours. I was surprised and proud of her. At one point the

Dr. kept asking her to match something up and Emelinne took the paper from her

and put it in the garbage. LOL. They have a two way mirror and I observed her

twice. I was told she struggles to say words because of a neurological

impairment. Also, her muscle tone is very bad and that is why her mouth is

always open and speech therapy would not have helped that. You cannot tell her

to do more than one thing at a time. She does not understand the communication

process (give and take). Wow.

doesn't understand communication, either, but I figured that was the

autism. If needs me to, say, open a snack for him, he'll bring the snack

to me and put it in my hands. Unless I then bring it up to my face, he will not

look at anything but my hands. It's like he doesn't understand that we're

people...we're more like tools in a lot of ways. Except for snuggling.

My 6-year-old was just diagnosed with Asperger's. My 9-year-old is on a waiting

list to be tested, too. My daughter seems ok so far. But I'm thinking that the

autism is just in the genes!

So Nereida,

I don't know whether to console or congratulate you. I will say this....good job

getting thru the eval and getting the diagnosis. I love your comment about

Emelinne throwing the paper in the garbage. he he. Sounds like somthing 'd

do. Oral motor therapy might help the muscle tone of her mouth if you can find a

speech or occupational therapist who knows what they're doing. In any case now

you're *really here*...right. That I'm happy about.

Bereida - the only thing I would say about the eval is that it doesn't

change your Emmeline. SHE CAN AND WILL LEARN - just not aon a timeline of

someone else's construct. She certainly understands give and take - she

took the paper and she got rid of it!!!

Elie has learned more and does more since he was over 20 than he did for

years before that.

Makes me remember what the true definition of retarded is: S

Sherry, yes, I now feel like I am " really here. " I think it is odd that I wanted

it confirmed yet I feel a little sad by the things I learned about her. I love

my Emelinne more than anything in the world and it just hurts me how she can't

put two and two together. All these years. Wow. And Sara the doctor also said

that she can and will still learn. She kept saying that Emelinne was very

complex and that she had not seen someone with severe MR with autism. They are

going to give me recommendations for speech therapists, etc. Oh, and they said

that the staph infection she has had for years could maybe affect her heart. I

still have the capsules I never used and they said to see if an injection can be

given to her. They also want me to get an EEG because of what she does with her

eyes and of course the endocrinologist about her not menstruating. Good lord,

it's like it was when she was a baby going to all the specialists! So many

things can be causing her SIB. The doc said the SIB may have started at 16

because she started understanding a little more and got frustrated. Also, she

stopped making progress in certain areas years ago because of the severe MR. So

much to absorb!

Hi Nereida,

What types of testing did they do? What types of testing did the school do? It

would be interesting to compare. I think she was very smart to throw the papers

in the trash,LOL.
